No news from Nowhere...
« on: 08:33:11, 01/02/19 »
Hello, just joined.
Rather rootless at present, but spent past 15+ years in Derbyshire, exploring White Peak between occasional hotel-hotel walking hols in France & Italy.
Being paying a lot more attention to birdwatching in past 5 years so now have to decide (when planning) whether to walk at 5kph or watch at 2kph...
Now moving to Scotland and trying to adjust to planning walks in the context of the Scottish Access code and discovering that some of those paths referred to on OS25k maps no longer exist! Lots to learn.

There are pros and cons to both the English rights of way and the Scottish access code.

In theory, the Scottish code is better, but in practice having universal access means nothing if there is no viable route across agricultural land.

pretty much the  the other end of Scotland in Dumfries and Galloway (although I hope to get to Orkney before I'm too much older!)

I’m on the other side of Scotland. Welcome from Aberdeenshire.

Welcome. Be interesting to hear how you get on with your interpretation of Scottish land reform act. On arriving at a lovely holiday let on the Isle of Arran, my heart was gladdened by the phrase, "You can't trespass in Scotland", which was part of the welcoming spiel of the owner of the cottage. A few years later, we were walking in Dumfries alongside the Solway Firth, I did a bit of research of recommended walks by local walking groups, but when we got there it was obvious that the local walkers were far to timid to use the field margins that would obviously get around some of the constraints of the limited path network.

I was rather disappointed in this because part of my teenage reading had been an author called Ian Niall, who spent his youth being taught old poaching techniques by the local poachers of that area. A Poachers Handbook and sequel was my bedtime reading for many years, then a few years ago I got the walk the very ground he learnt this ancient craft.
