There's an obvious route onto the hills directly from Tebay too.

Nice photos, which really show one of the best things about the Howgills - you nearly always have them to yourselves.  Though I do remember being mugged for my sandwiches by one of the local sheep once!

Thanks Islandplodder - the sheep kept a respectable distance as we has our dog with us!

And, as an added bonus, the views of the Howgills from the M6 approaching the Tebay turn off from the south are absolutely stunning.

Really tempted by a wild camp in the northern Howgills -  Langdale or Bowderdale - been looking at the map in detail.

Anyone any experience of wild camping in the Howgills - attitude of farmers in particular. Not that they would be likely to disturb me in Langdale!

We've never seen a farmer anywhere on our Howgills trips, we have a couple of short backpacks in the area. The hills are generally excellent for pitching though, nice and grassy but with no craggy bits or walls to give shelter if it's windy.

I have never met a soul on any of the northern ridges or in the valleys.  There is some evidence of quad bike tracks but it looks to just be shepherds so any traffic would be infrequent and daytime.  I have never walked in Langdale but Bowderdale is an unspoiled area, not even a stone wall and there are flat areas near the beck.

Nice write up and pics Richard  O0

I'll be staying in Dent this summer and am looking forward to exploring some of the less popular fells.

Cheers for posting.

Thanks Mel. The Howgills are unique - well worth a visit.

Dentdale is lovely - stayed at the excellent Sportsman's Inn at the head of the valley a few times - many years ago, I might add!
