Windermere Area
« on: 22:27:48, 07/08/20 »
Hi all. I'm heading to Kendal on Sunday and staying for three nights and I am wondering if people have any suggestions for my 'basic' plans. I'll be with my 13 year old lad who is getting harder to please the older he gets, so anything that will help steer him away from yapping on and on, and on about Xbox will be most welcome.

I won't be arriving until mid-afternoon on Sunday, so figured I'd check in to the hotel, dump the luggage then go for a short walk around Kendal. Is the castle or any other historic sites good to view, or am I best having a walk by the river and more into the countryside? Probably looking for a two or three hour walk.

Monday I am thinking of heading to Ambleside, looking around there, then maybe going up high to get a good view of the scenery. Is there anything in that area that is particularly interesting please? Any decent waterfalls or caves?

Tuesday I was going to head across the water from Windermere, to the east side. I know there is a steam train that is a short journey but other than that I was going to play it by ear. Is there much else to see over that side?

The last day I am going to Windermere. I'm hiring a boat for a couple of hours, so along with sightseeing, I am pretty much sorted for that day.

Any suggestions most welcome. I was initially planning for this to be a walking holiday with a little sightseeing and a few activities to keep my son happy, but I think it's going to flip around and it'll be more a stroll around the towns. Think I might have to go on my own another time for serious walking lol.

Thanks all

Here is a route I used to walk while my car was being serviced in Bowness.  Starts from the ferry landing  on the west bank.

This walk is from Elterwater which is towards Langdale from Ambleside 0ncludes Cathedral Cave.

Failing that - Loughrigg near Ambleside has a cave too - Rydal Cave

or this

Torches not needed in either cave - see if you can spot the fish.  (Goldfish in the case of Catherdral Cave)

That made me smile - I have a 13 year old XBOX addict too! :)

Now to business:

Kendal Castle is a short distance to the east of Kendal Town Centre
https://www.visitcumbria.com/sl/kendal-castle/

Scout Scar to the west - a lovely limestone escarpment with fantasitc views of the fells.

Rydal Water and Grasmere are worth a look, maybe a trip up Loughrigg too. There's a slate cavern on the side of Loughrigg overlooking Rydal that is worth a peep - no torch needed. Loughrigg and Rydal Water are within walking distance of Ambleside.

There are various activities available at Brockhole visitor center near Windermere

A criuse on Windermere is a must, could be combined with a trip on the railway that you mention.

There's also a small motor museum at Haverthwaite, near the railway.

PS - don't miss Rydal Water (beautiful) and Loughrigg (stunning views)

Another suggestion - bike hire, and a trip up beautiful Longsleddale, to the N of Kendal. You could even go for an electric bike.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just been googling them all and I am definitely interested in incorporating them into my itinerary.

Ninthace - the first and last suggested walks look appealing. I like the idea of the wooded area on the east side of Windermere. Richard has also suggested Rydal, so that looks to be a must then when I visit Ambleside.

Richard, some good ideas there. I am hiring a boat so not sure if I will bother with a cruise. I know I will take the ferry across the water at some point tho. Depends on cost. This was kind of supposed to be a cheap walking/sightseeing break but think it is going to turn out expensive keeping little un entertained lol.

The Brockhole Activity Centre looks good, tempted to have a go myself but have a feeling I'll end up having a bit of a panic on the high ropes as I am not the most agile of creatures. Jake might like a go though. I prefer the idea of hiring an electric bike. Been wanting to try one.

Will have a look at that museum when we go to the steam train as I was wanting something to do whilst at that side.

Thanks both of you!

Stock Ghyll Force is just on the eastern outskirts of Ambleside. You can carry on to Wansfell Pike if you fancy a steep climb. Drop down the other side for lunch at the Mortal Man.
