Title: Cheap and Reliable Accomodation
Post by: joester on 18:19:43, 25/01/10
Let us attempt to create a useful list of places Forum members have found favourable to get a cheap roof over their heads.

Think budget b&bs, independant hostels, bunkbarns, guest houses and cheap hotels.

I would suggest the following format:

- Name of Place and brief description of its nature (see above rough categories).
- Location and contact details (be succinct).
- Price pppn.
- Pre-book or turn up?
- Facilites, heating? hot water? showers? (be succinct).

Perhaps we'll start by breaking the country down into the same sections as the Forum does, we can mutate it by general agreement to make it more useful as it develops.

Peak District:

http://www.eltonholidays.com/bed_and_breakfast.html - Matlock, Derbyshire. This room was very large, it had a four poster bed with two big single beds. There was an area with a flat screen TV and a small seating area. It has its own private bathroom with shower and bath which is just outside the room. Plenty of choice for breakfast, and we were asked all the time if we would like more. We were charged £75 which I think was excellent value.

Stratford on Avon;

Not necessarily in the heart of walking country but if you fancy a visit to Stratford on Avon area the Youth Hostel (YHA - Alveston, just outside SOA) was absolutely brilliant.

As a non member I paid £18 (£15 for members) which included an amazing cooked buffet style breakfast.

Drying room, well-equipped self-catering kitchen, or you can buy an evening meal (about half pub prices).  TV room. Showers and loos were spotlessly clean. Various sizes of rooms. Car park.

Bridge of Orchy Bunkhouse

Winter: - 1st October 2009 - 31st March 2010
£15 Bed/Linen/Towels included (full payment required at time of booking)
Summer - 1st April 2010 - 31st October 2010

£25 Bed/Linen/Towels & Breakfast

I was surprised to see this...I like the Bridge of Orchy a lot and am there regularly, probably about once a fortnight during busy times, excellent coffee, cake, real fires and decent bar food, Duncan the manager is a top guy and very helpful. I can't fault the hotel. However, I feel the  the bunkhouse lets it down. It's not the most popular overnight among our clients on WHW and hillwalking groups.

Main gripes- no kitchen facilities or even space to use a stove.
Basic bathrooom facilities not adequate when busy.
No drying facilities.

As an alternative, try the By The Way in Tyndrum

'Vrienden op de Fiets' provides cheap and reliable accomodation for walkers (and cyclists).  These families charge 19 euro pppn (around £17) and for this price you get your own room and bed with sheets for the night and a breakfast in the morning.  Bathroom facilities are generally shared, but even that's not always the case.  15 families in the UK and Ireland already joined this organisation that is extremely widespread and popular among touring hikers and cyclists in the Low Countries.

In the UK, you will find them in Bewdley (near Birmingham), Colchester, Dunferline, Hilston-Dorset (near Dorchester), Nairn, Newburn (near Newcastle), Ruislip, Sale (near Manchester), Sheffield, Tywyn (Wales), West Ayton Scarborough and West Kilbride, in Ireland in Castletownbere and Dun Laoghaire (near Dublin).

http://www.beaconsbackpackers.co.uk/ (http://www.beaconsbackpackers.co.uk/) which is part of The New Inn at Bwlch between Abergavenny and Brecon. What great place to stay, we were made very welcome. The bunkhouse does not have a kitchen for guests to use, however, good solid pub grub can be purchased at the bar and a basic cereal, toast and tea/coffee breakfast is provided as part of the accommadation cost, a cooked breakfast can be provided if requested. Thats' the formalities out the way, this is a fantastically cosy welcoming place to stay, we had booked late due to a change of walk plan but had planned an evening meal provided by ourselves, although we had not realised we didn't have kitchen to warm our food we nevertheless asked the owner if the chilli could be warmed up in the pub kitchen. this was agreed and indeed a free large bowl of chips was provided, this was followed by a cake all of which waseaten in the pub. We had also planned our own electric mulled ribena, again the pub's hospitality extended to warming the ribena and allowing us to drink it in the bar. We acknowledged the hospitality by reducing the contents of the electric lemonade barrels as best we could and also requested a cooked breakfast baguette. The pub is very cosy and welcoming, we sat by the fire all night warming and drying our boots, the owner and the blokes running the pub and bunkhouse are very, very friendly and somehow nicely create a very informal atmosphere, it was like visiting an old friends house where you know you can make yourdself at home and not get in the way. Without a doubt I would go back (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/afro.gif) (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/afro.gif) (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/afro.gif) (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/afro.gif) (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/afro.gif)

Just spent a couple of nights in Dundee Backpackers - an amazing building, cleanest kitchen and bathrooms I've seen, and I was lucky enough to have a single room - which easily outshone an expensive hotel room. Dundee's rather nice too - Edinburgh architecture without the tourists.

I hope the YHA people are reading this.

It's rather noteworthy that the only mention of a Youth Hostel points out that it's 'not walking country'.

Once upon a time it was Youth Hostels that provided walkers with reasonably priced places to stay, now it seems they're great if you want to visit Manchester or London, but not so useful if you need somewhere to stay in Britain's prime walking areas.

I have had B&B at the Crown in Horton, and got an upset stomach from undercooked food, but it might have changed hands in the twenty years since then.

If you ever get to Norway and find yourself in or around Flam I can thoroughly recommend the Brekkegard Hostel. I paid 45NOK (approx £56) per night in September 2013. Clean rooms, good facilities and great hosts. Don't shop at the local CooP supermarket in Flam harbour, this supermarket is there for tourists getting off the cruise ships and it is horendously expensive. Better to go to Aurland (8km) and stock up from a choice of two supermarkets (about 40% cheaper). You can also get popular butane and propane canisters in the Aurland Outdoor centre. Incidentally, part used gas canisters are often left at the hostel (behind the stove in the kitchen) because they are prohibited on the plane.

Bussekspress runs a regular service throughout west Norway, and its cheap. £3 to Aurland!

Can really recommend Ardachearnbeg Cottages in Glendaruel if you fancy a trip to some seriously beautiful, completely ignored and genuinely wild countryside! The Cowal Peninsular is right on my doorstep (I'm on Bute) and it's glorious. Ok, it's also often very wet and walks can be rugged, but it's totally worth it. Really lovely couple running a group of cottages, so excellent for groups. They'll do you a packed lunch and the cottages are cosy but not swish, so you don't feel bad about dirty boots or dogs. They also do a concierge service so you don't have to do a shop. And the shortbread in the welcome pack is lush!
We paid £12pppn in the off season. Just look for ardachearnbeg online.

Ennerdale

Bradley's Riding Centre & Bed and Breakfast http://www.walk-rest-ride.co.uk/

Stayed at this place in the bunkhouse Saturday and I cant recommend it highly enough, paid £25 for the night with a full English Breakfast. The Bunkhouse sleeps 10 and they have a double and two twin rooms all sharing the same facilities. One shower, one toilet and one fully stocked kitchen including a washing machine and microwave as well as all crockery and even the basics tea and coffee, washing up liquid, shower gel etc.
Just like a YHA setup with the private rooms and bunkroom apart from sharing the toilet and shower. If full there would be a wait to use the shower but that to me is not the end of the world. Had a great front room with big leather couch and chairs, wood burning stove powering the central heating system, TV, games, books and cards. Really cosy on a evening in a traditional working farm environment.

Not for you if you don't like the idea of sharing the bunkhouse and B&B with possible strangers but the idea of meeting new like minded people in such a great place is to me one of the attractions .

They do camping as well with a breakfast if you like and have caravan hook up available although the roads leading to the farm are narrow with passing places so if your a nervous caravanner its not for you. The owners Dorothy and Graham are salt of the earth and cant do enough to make your stay a nice one.
I can imagine this place on a winters night full of walkers with the roaring fire going and the beer flowing and it being a right good night. Would make a great place for a forum meet to book it out for 10 people  :) so may just do that next year sometime.

Ennerdale Bridge is just down the road with 2 pubs and so  Cleator Moor for your usual stores and take aways. Great place and worth a try if you don't mind sharing etc

I have only just joined so please forgive me if someone has suggested this before, but for very flexible and always available accomodation, why not build yourself a panel van conversion?

I spent 6 months converting a LWB Renault Master earlier this year and now we are off both far and wide visiting places we had never dreamed of stopping at before and more often than not by parking very carefully we are not having to pay caravan/camping site fees either.

Next September/October we will be travelling over to Europe and very slowly following the Channel coast of France then across the Northern coast of Spain before finally following the cost of Portugal, stopping, we hope, every night on either 'aires' or wild camping.  I have just read an article about someone who did just this and their total site costs over 8 weeks came to €47!

All the best

Just spent 4 nights in the Spean Bridge Hotel.   Nothing spectacular, but very friendly. All the staff were charming and I think Polish.  There is also a small museum at the Hotel, dedicated to Polish Commandos.

The log cabins, out the back, are £55.00 per night and can sleep 3.  Full Breakfast was another £7.00.  But I bought a pint of milk and box of Fruit and fibre from the Spar shop 50 yards away, as I was out early walking each day.

Fletcher House, Market Street, Kirby Stephen.    Tel: 01768 371013.  £55 single B&B (July 2016) One of the best of the many B&B's that I have stayed in.  En-suite bedroom . Separate "pamper bathroom" for guests to use. Foot Spa, comfortable guest lounge, hot drinks machine and cake available at anytime at no extra cost. (help yourself from the dining room) One that I would certainly use if ever in the area again.

Little town B&B, Newlands Valley, Near Keswick
I stayed at this lovely B&B earlier in the year. It was £44 per night. The rooms are en-suite. The breakfast is fantastic and they do packed lunches too. It's situated in the middle of the Newlands Valley so excellent walking options.

I had a good idea and decided to buy a new vehicle to solve my accomadation needs. It didn't work out! I bought a 7 seater car, the back 5 seats all fold flat to the size a a small double bed. My plan was to drive, park, hike and then sleep in it. 4 years later and I've never used it for this purpose. Awful idea really. I use a tent and hopefully cheap camp sites. I only need a an 6' x 4' piece of flat grass!

Generator (for wild camping)

Ugh! Just the sort of thing that I go wild camping to escape!

Don't get me wrong, the idea of hiring a teardrop caravan has it's appeal, but a generator - as popular as a rattlesnake in a lucky dip :)

Hallo everyone - new Snowdonia hostel

We've just opened a hostel in Snowdonia in the wonderful Ogwen Valley with views of Tryfan and the Glyders. We can sleep up to 26 people in comfortable accommodation with linen provided. You can walk, hike, climb or bike from the door and we have parking for 8-10 cars. A short walk takes you to a river to swim in. From £20 a night. We are surrounded by most of the Welsh Three Thousands. And there are lots of lovely walks away from the crowds on Snowdon.

Preferably book via our website snowdoniamountainhostel.com where you can get more info and pics.
Thanks for reading this.

Shetland camping Bods. http://camping-bods.co.uk/index.asp
They are basically posh Bothies that you pre book.
You could have a very cheap walking holiday in Shetland if you booked one of these each night.
or you could alternate a night in a Bod and a night or 2 camping in between.
I used the Fetlar one for 2 nights when I was walking the coastline.
I shared it with one night with Lucy Wood who had just completed a LOJG walk and then hired a car to visit Orkney and Shetland. We were luck that night in that there was a clear sky and I could show her the Northern Lights faintly on the horizon and some shooting stars and many satellites passing overhead.
The next night I shared with a Lady who had cycled from South of England. She was heading back down the West coast of Scotland then Ireland back to a Birthday party in Weymouth.
The Bods are great and have an interesting History.
It would certainly help balance the price of the Ferry.

I think we could turn this topic to the cheap/reliable and self-contained places which you have stayed during past year.

Thank you so much!

This thread may need revitalising. I wonder how many of these places survived Covid?

I'll restart by mentioning the hostel at Earby. Great value, wonderful host. Info on the www.

You appear to be sending us a 'morse code' type of message. What is it?

I'm getting old, I can't remember why I wrote 'You appear to be sending us a 'morse code' type of message. What is it?' or did I just type it to the wrong topic? Sorry about that.

After my hiking trips this year, I can only conclude that the only reliable 'Cheap and Reliable' accommodation is to wild camp in a tent or bivvy.

I know I managed to get 2 x £5 nights on a site in Tavistock but I'm sure that was just a fluke.

There's a site I check before I head to the Lake District if it's of interest.  If you search for Lake District Offers it comes up around page one.  (it's actually called Lake District Offers) - It collates all those deal sites, etc.. so you get them cheaper where available and some of the offers include dinner too.

There's a good few current offers now we're in the Autumn / Winter period..  :)

I'm not mentally ready for campsites that charge £15 a night, I still work on £10 a night maximum. I have paid more, of course, but I get angry at myself every time that extra £5 goes from my hand to someone else's hand.

The only 'good value' £15 a night that I can think of was when I stayed at the YHA on November 10th last year, having the benefit of being able to go into the hostel in the cold and dark was, I believe, worth a fiver.

If I was 'sensible,' in the spring and summer, I'd always give above £10 a night campsites a miss. But I also know that It's now 2024, so will there be any £10 a night campsites anywhere?

For me, wild camping is the way to go, my thinking keeps telling me that £10 will buy me 2 pints of beer.

£15 a night?

I paid £20 for 2 nights (although I left after the first night because I injured my ankle, but that is another story...)

I'm old, did I really pay £10 a night?? Anyway, I thought for the reasons stated that it was good value. Maybe I'm now moving into Mr Biden territory?

Don't trust that latest report, it was produced by a Trump supporter!!
..although what a dismal choice America faces.

Enough politics - yes definitely £10 a night - I checked my bank statement.

I don't set the prices, just thought it was a good one to include as you walk straight out onto the moor from there. I'd rather wild camp as well but given the ongoing problem with him whose name I refuse to mention that's another story!
