Training Walk
« on: 22:32:40, 07/06/09 »
Last Saturday a couple of us decided to walk part of the Wolds Way (Goodmanham to Thixendale) as part of our final training preparations for the Lyke Wake Walk, which we’ll be doing in July, for a local charity. We’ve done quite a bit of our preparation on the Wolds Way as it is only a stones throw from where we live and gives variable terrain. For those of you who know it, a lot of time has been spent going up and down the hill at Wintringham, quite testing, especially if you do it 4 times in a row, with only a minute between to get your breath back.
Anyway back to Saturday, the wife dropped us off at about 10. 30 a.m. at Goodmanham and we set straight off, the weather forecast wasn’t encouraging, heavy showers etc., but we thought what the hell, faint heart and all that. To be brief, Passed through the pretty villages of Londesborough and Nunburnholme, through some beautiful Wolds scenery, particularly Sylvan Dale, tough climb here. Bypassed Huggate on to Fridaythorpe – halfway stage of the full walk – and finally on to Thixendale, arriving at 10 to six just in time for a couple of pints before Jims partner picked us up and back home. 22 miles in all with a lot of uphill walking. Completed it in 7and half hours including rests. Not bad for an old git with a new hip and a guy on the longest walk of his life. We’ll be doing this again with another member of our team as final preparation, although I think (hope), we’re about ready now. Hoping to complete the Lyke Wake in 14 to 16 hours. Forgot to mention, got “mauled” by the friendliest dog in the world in a farmyard near Nunburnholme, covered in mud, thought he’d be with us for the rest of the walk, but stopped at the farm boundary.
