Too nippy for your running eh ? ..... ::)
-
A gentleman does not run, it panics the staff and frightens the horses. As a means of transport it leaves a lot to be desired and as a form of entertainment it is a non starter.

Was enough to close Princetown Primary School! :-\

Soft southern Jesses. My school didn't shut in 62/63 when we had snow for months.

Neither did mine. I remember walking on pavements which had been piled up with snow from attempts to clear the road. I don't think modern youngsters even know how to walk to school. My neighbour still takes his 14 year old daughter to school every day and it is less than 0.7miles.

My Primary School in Clanfield had to be close, the toilets froze solid for two weeks ;D
-
In my school they lit coke braziers to stop the toilets freezing.
-
Funny thread guys. I do love a good monty python sketch. O0

I remember our toilets freezing, but they didn't close the school!

Planning to circle around all the 600s tommorow. So if there is any snow up there I will find it. Not taking my spikes.
-
Some painfull sleet, but alas no snow today. Certainly no need for spikes, though waders would have been usefull. ;)

Just beautiful today - crunchy sparkling snow, blue skies and warm sunshine - eventually we enjoyed a lovely bimble from Haytor to Saddle tor, along to Black hill and back down to the (closed) lower car park by Haytor.
Eventually because it was obvious that the road up from to Bovey Tracey had not been gritted. We abandoned our first early attempt as vehicles were slithering all over the place then later parked below Haytor - entertainment provided by a coach that failed to make the hill past Haytor and had to reverse back down, tried to turn in the carpark, obliterated the traffic cones, got stuck and the passengers got out to help the driver dig the snow away from the rear, drive, wheels.
I forgot my camera!!!!!

Yes I was looking with envy at the white tops on the moor as I drove home from work today. O0
I followed a HGV up from Bovey many years back. Thinking in would be fun to drive home accross the moor in the hire car I was in. Pretty much did what the coach did after I realised what a daft idea it was.
-
According to the amber weather warning it looks like there will be a lot of snow on Dartmoor later today with a lot of snow in a short period of time. Hope everyone in the warning area will be OK.

Rain in Exeter but lots of the white stuff at Postbridge

Barely 2cm on the mid Devon ridges at present but still falling. Been out in it but still not enough for my winter gear yet!
-
A lot of snow falling as I drove home from the climbing centre this evening. It covered the carriage way in just a few minutes. I have parked up on the main road a few hundred yards from home. Our road could well be treacherous by morning. :o
Sounds like they have basicaly shut all the road s accross Dartmoor.

Glad we restocked yesterday as the snow is now deep and crisp and even. Don't think we will be going anywhere until the plough has been through. Trouble is one end of the village is North Devon Council and the other end is Mid Devon so neither council sees us as being their responsibility. Last time it snowed, it was 3 days before a plough showed up. Might have to get the snowshoes out :)
-
This time, thankfully Snowdonia and the rest of North Wales has escaped the heavy snow.
Its all been centred on Southern Britain.
None has fallen here in Dyffryn, meaning i can go about my daily routine.
-
This time the snowplough went through about 3am after the snow. Major roads pretty well back to normal so I owe the Council an apology. Only inconvenience is they have had to reschedule the bin collection. We can live with that! Another day and I shall be able to get the car out. We have had some excellent roof avalanches - sounds like all the slates are coming off.

Bit busy round Haytor today!

Sorry, for some reason I can't post the actual picture.

Defeated by deep snow and deteriorating weather this morning whilst trying to climb modest Mid Hill here in Orkney, all of 903' high. Thigh deep in places whilst stumbling across, or should I say into, peat banks, and the poor dog had 'snow balls' the size of oranges sticking to the fur of her back legs. Time to sound the retreat.
Apparently Mid Hill is classified a 'Marilyn', whatever that means ::) It is certainly the smallest hill that I have failed to climb.
-
I believe a Marilyn needs to have a prominence of 150m, irrespective of its height, so the smallest Marilyn could be only 150m above sea level, if on a small island.
-
Hmm, don't think that I am going to become an ardent Marylinist.
PS - apparently only 10 people have climbed them all - sea stacks off St Kilda being a bit of an obstacle.

150m sea stacks respect to whoever climbed those. :o
Not many on Dartmoor though. Just lots of damp snow today.
