is there a better tent for the money, 2 person (solo hike) need the space. For me a bit pricey at 300 bucks but willing to spend for an upgrade. Every review keeps pointing me in this direction. Thoughts

Hi Doug
I believe that someone on this forum has a Naturehike Mongar 2 man tent which is a Chinese copy of the MSR and a lot cheaper.

That being said, there are regular wild campers on this forum who use an MSR a lot.

I've owned and used several tents over the years
I haven't used the MSR Hubba Hubba 2 person, but about 18 months ago I bought an MSR NX Solo
I think I can safely say that the standard of construction, sewing, and general workmanship is the best I've ever seen; and that includes Hilleberg
The price is reasonable enough for a quality tent of that type
I've used it in heavy rain and winds with no problems
If you can possibly afford it, get a footprint as well
Beware - like most manufacturers now you only get a limited number of pegs (pins to you!), so you'll probably need to buy a few more
MSR's own brand 'Nails' are a good compromise between weight and the cost of titanium
But as Richard has mentioned you could get a Chinese copy and replace it if it wears out sooner - your choice, I'm afraid
Search YouTube; there will be videos of both
If you're considering one of these, pay attention to the specs - there are different options & prices for different quality, weight, and colours of materials

We have an MSR Elixir 2 and we wouldn't buy a Chinese copy of it. MSR gear is exceptionally good quality and as zuludog says it is superb workmanship. We will be buying the MSR Hubba Hubba for our next tent when we save up our pennies.

The Elixir has been in some right storms, O0
Would be interesting to see if the Chinese copy would stand up to it :)

I saw a lot of MSR tents at the campsite at the head of Loch Lomond last June - obviously very popular with people doing the West Highland Way.
-
MSR’s better workmanship and double zips on Flysheet also
Compare pole materials used too...
MSR proven
Google lowest price
Go outdoors will price match plus another 10% off makes for a cheaper purchase

The low HH rating is putting me off this & the Hubba. Tell me more about its waterproofness if you may .

Its coated with silicon ours has never leaked it's a great tent O0

An HH of 3000 is deemed suitable for most of the UK year round. The studies ( via google) show that that is only one factor to take into account. Badly stitched and proofed seams are a major cause of water leaks. My wife restitched and proofed every seam on my cheapie tent, the factory stiching was skimped to the nth degree. The ability for wind blown rain to get in under the flysheet is another weak area as is the fly zip itself. These are all areas where costs can be and are cut.

Depending on your use/needs, I'd really consider the Trailstar. Massive fan of it, though obviously weight becomes a different concern if you are bringing an inner.

It has never leaked. We will be buying another MSR tent, they are quality tents :)

I considered an MSR 1 when I last bought a tent but instead bout a Marmot Pulsar 1P, when compared I though that my Marmot had greater inner space. I like it still, yes and the footprint is really welcome.
