This was just the funniest bird I've seen...great comedy value when it broke into a run.It was like its feet didn't belong to it!!Anyone know what the heck it is?

Black-winged Stilt ?

I would have said so as well, adult male in summer but not a UK resident or visitor is it? So this is maybe in Spain?

I'm sure I read somewhere last year that a pair of these landed up somewhere in Cheshire but agree, more likely mainland europe

well played gents - cr355 and snowslider win the bonus - it is indeed a black-winged stilt  :)
extra point for ss too - as it is indeed a super-rare visitor to the UK and this one was snapped in Spain. In March though, so not quite summer plumage.

I am most impressed i'm not the only twitcher round here!

I love that picture of the chamois looking at you quizically, snowslider! I thought they were really shy!

lucky guess on the location, cr355 takes the points there :D

chamois and ibex can both be curious, they're not daft either, hunting's only allowed in some areas and they're pretty good at avoiding those areas. Mostly they hear us coming and get away, snowshoes are a disaster normally, on my own on skis/skins I'm fairly quiet though and those Ibex (a bachelor herd) clearly didn't see us a threat.

We chanced on some a few weeks back near Vercorin, mother with two fairly mature offspring. I was surprised to see one so near the path with the noise of three of us on raquettes and guessed there was a reason so we stopped still and sure enough the two young wandered over the path while mum looks on from the side. One the young decided we were worth a look though.
