Anyone know if this is a hornet?
Looks a bit like the big beasties I photographed on Skopelos (Greece). Did they look like this?.....
If yours were the same, they are Large yellow-headed Scoliid Wasps - Megascolia maculata. The largest European wasps there are.

....and I was more than a bit nervous photographing them, as I got quite close....although they were too busy feeding on the thistles to notice me! I took a bit of video footage too. Not sure how to post that on here though.

Yes, I think those are the same species. Big bar stewards.

Something a bit prettier from my trip to Bad Kleinkircheim last week. There are two species in the picture but I can't name either.
This one is less pretty but it was big enough to show on radar. No idea what it is either.

The wasp on the thistle is stunning.
I think the gorgeous blues might be Mazarine Blues (book says males gather in large numbers to drink on wet mud)
The black & white butterfly underside? might be a Hungarian skipper
No idea about the other beastie thought reminds me a bit of a mayfly.

I visited Brockholes in Preston recently, predominantly to take pics of the bird life. It turned out that the insect life was faaar more diverse and interesting.

Great pics Ian
I photographed a few six-spot burnet moths myself last week on the Llyn. They look very odd in flight but rather beautiful when settled!

Thanks all.
So that's a Skipper on the "Thistle" is it? I'm no good at wild plants..
And that's a Burnet is it?? I thought it was a Cinabar Moth. Mind you, I thought the blue one was a dragonfly until my mate told me it was a Damsel fly... 0/10

Fabulous photos everyone. You can even see the 'lace' pattern on the wings of the Damsel.
This reminds me I need to look closer at all these smaller creatures, they are equal to the bigger beasties
