Thanks for that! Recorder is now set.
Looking forward to it, though I often get the feeling that Channel 5 progs are the 'leftovers' that the BBC declined. We shall see.

Just started watching, lots of verbal diarrhoea who writes the narratives for these programs. The wildlife shots are much better.

Not the greatest programme but I guess it was at a level for the target market (Joe Public ???)

Any programme, documentary or feature film based on a subject on which you have some knowledge or expertise will always be a disappointment. Any programme that meets or exceeds your (our) demands would probably go 'above the heads' of the majority.

Some documentary makers have got the knack, for me its usually the verbals that ruin it. I've always thought that it takes a lot to beat Yellowstone and Wild China. I started to watch the Ben Nevis but got bored and watched a film instead,

I'm not sure I'm even going to bother trying this one. We gave up on Channel 5's recent Wild Britain series part-way through the second episode, the narration was so bad. I think the statement about grouse moor owners improving wildlife diversity in the uplands and protecting the ecosystem was the final straw for us if I remember correctly.

Thank heavens I missed that one. Would have been jumping up and down shouting at the TV as I was when, on Countryfile  15 April, the pig farmer lady likened farrowing crates to 'the specialised facility' in the hospital where she herself gave birth. I had no idea that after a birth the NHS confines new mothers in a metal crate the same size as themselves, without bedding, on a slats so poop and pee drain away, with no room to turn around for 'only' 28 days.
Good that Countryfile showed the true situation.
So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

Not the greatest show but it had some interest, I thought the attitude of Claire Maxted who had to be rescued was shocking, twas noticable that the guy with her declined to interview.

It was great to see some mainstream footage of Dave McLeod a great character and thoroughly decent bloke, even tho Echo Wall is a bit dated.

I have been in, up and around obsevatory many times but never knew the history.

BUT

The natural history stuff was almost amateurish by todays standards and there was a lot of padding including repeat shots to make the hour mark.

I think this is more of a generational thing, back when I was climbing ice routes on Scottish hills we didn't have phones so we couldn't call for help. Given that they were only three pitches from the top her partner could have used an assisted hoist and got her over the hard part so they could continue to the summit and walked off. But, if you don't know how to do an assisted hoist that option isn't open to you.

I googled Claire Maxted and it all became obvious and yes it sure is a generation thing making a living out of social media.

This probably gets the 2018 prize for longest time before a reply.
I didn't actually see the programme being mentioned but I noticed MWM's reference to Claire Maxted (as above quote). The only point I can add to the discussion (in case anyone gives a t0ss) is that she used to be on the writing staff of Trail magazine.
Perhaps writing is one thing and presenting is altogether a different matter. You would like to believe that a writer in such a periodical had an appreciation for the subject and not display a bad attitude.
