An alternative three peaks?
« on: 09:33:51, 07/12/06 »
After my less than tranquil 3 peaks walk last year (mentioned in the other 3 peaks thread) I devised an alternative route that would miss out some of the busier stretches. (The climb of Ingleborough from Chapel le Dale in particular often seems to be a bit of a procession).

This one starts and finishes at Ingleton, though obviously you could start anywhere on the route.......

1. Climb Ingleton via Crina Bottom.
2. Descend to Horton, either via the "classic" route, or via Little Ingleborough / Gaping Gill / Long Scar / Sulber.
3. Penyghent to Ribblehead and Whernside as per the classic route.
4. From the top of Whernside, instead of dropping down to Chapel le Dale, walk straight down the long ridge to Twisleton Hall.
5. From here you could finish via Thornton Force and the River Twiss. (Or down the other half of the waterfalls walk, the River Doe).
Alternatively, you could just walk down the road to Ingleton.

If the walk was done in reverse you could start off via one leg of the waterfalls walk which would be a nice start.

Anquet makes the route about 27.4 - 29 miles depending on the exact route taken.

I have not done this walk in full yet, though have done all the route at one time or another.
I had hoped to do it this year but didn't get round to it.

Interesting. If you do it let us know how you get on. Just off to get the map out to see where exactly you mean. Might try it myself in the spring or summer when the days get long enough to facilitate my early (alpine) starts.
Will this wind be so mighty as to lay low the mountains of the Earth?

You're right, it's one to save for the summer. Since the "normal" 3 peaks took me 9 hours I guess it would probably take at least 11 hours.

It would be difficult to post a map really due to the large area involved but if anyone's interested I can email them the route.

Isnt Penyghent one of the original 3 peaks as in English ones and not the "commercialised charity or lunatic time trial" 3 highest EWS stuff?

What about the original Lyke Wake Walk ?

Whats the fasination with doping it in a time? What about what you see, what you do and who you may do it with?

My obsession with time extends as far as wanting to know that if I start a long walk, that there is a reasonable expectation that I will finish it within daylight hours.

Funny how people on these forums make all sorts of assumptions without knowing the first thing about you.
