Title: Video making challenge
Post by: Maggot on 10:09:09, 09/03/19
There has been talk of how videos should look etc.

Just for a bit of fun, who fancies a video making challenge (NOT competition)?  We could do a three minute maximum video of a walk or discussing our kit or something.  Let's see our different styles and what we would like from an outdoors video.  I guess 90% have a smartphone, so nothing flash and slickly edited with a ton of software, just a clip showing what we may look for in a video.

Anyone up for that?  Post it up by 9 tomorrow evening?

I might give it a go, I have a couple of things I have been meaning to edit for a long time but lost the mojo!

Tomorrow evening?! I'm absolutely nowhere from doing that, but I have some video content I should have done something with and this seems a decent excuse.  Expect me to take a while doing it though - I've found DaVinci Resolve which is a beast of a program for editing, but has a learning curve.

Ok I have missed the deadline.  Should be tomorrow morning.

Ok this is my effort.

https://youtu.be/kyABcRPDlos

Criticise away!

My own self critique - not 100% sold on the music.  Needs more b-cam (views, hills, time-lapse, wildlife) but I didn't film it.  Audio is Ok for the conditions (strong winds).

I enjoyed your video. Mainly because of the nostalgia. Over 60 years ago my oldest brother  (16 years older  than me) lived in Whitworth, following his National Service. I remember we walked those moors (my memory is of of many reservoirs and multicoloured streams (due to the dye used in the mills as I recall, they used to dump stuff up on the moors then) and peat. It was the first time my mam had ever been outside Northumberland. Memories.

Yes the moors are full of old quarries, drift mines and pits.

Sadly its becoming a bit of a dumping ground again with fly tippers.

I think he has missed his own deadline.
Liked Roughyed's video, though it is a shame not to be able to compare it to a self proclaimed expert's example. In many TR's, videos or otherwise I miss knowing where the person is, in Roughyed's video he say's where he is in the opening sequence. Perhaps a small point, but too often missed.
Missing your own deadline!! Wow :knuppel2:

Not so fast, Mr Ridge, while Beefys video has some strong points, such as brevity and explosions, does it tell a story? Do we understand Beefy's angst?  I am reserving judgement.  There may be a (very) late winner. Any. Minute. Now.

Thanks. Yeh it was a laugh and always good to have a dog on a walk.

I see you're not just a fair weather walker. I think you had some nice shots in there. Actually your self criticism is probably more relevant to my video than yours. To keep it from getting too long we edited a lot, but lost a lot of those "music and fun" shots.
I liked your bits of walking into the distance and jumping one point to another.

Ok I have done another one -

https://youtu.be/LoaslqfH0Ys

Tried with no music this time.  I don't only walk in snow, its just they are the only 2 walks filmed in 11 months!

My own self critique - Needs more b-cam (views, hills, time-lapse, wildlife) but I didn't film it.  Similar if not same shots as last time, If you walk the same places you tend to film the same thing.

Its a GoPro Hero 7, so its got amazing stabilisation, really big improvement on other versions.  Not as good as a gimbal but a lot less hassle.

Roughyed, no music is so weird. Maybe that could become your niche though. I remember some Japanese films I used to watch by Takeshi Kitano. I realised what made them so strange was that they had no music. We are so used to music playing a big part in film, especially for creating atmosphere/feelings. Without it you decide for yourself what you feel.
Title: Re: Video making challenge
Post by: jimbob on 16:08:12, 25/06/19
Personally I like no music. It seems to invade every corner of our lives,  and to those of us whose hearing isn't  too great , it just doesn't help being in the background permanently  drowning other more important messages. By the way I am a musician (hence the hearing problems) so appreciate music in the right place at the correct time.

I do use music sometimes, but I also like the natural noises (the sea, skylarks).  I'm not sure I get the balance right to be honest.

I liked the music with it. Well done on your videos.
I have been putting music with my video slide shows for some time but as they are home shows and the music is off discs and tapes, copyright stuff I can't put them out for all to see. Finding suitable sound tracks, for open source, seems to be a bit of a problem. I prefer not use soundtrack with singing as they never seem quite right and I don't seem to have the patience to listen to endless soundtracks trying to find something.

I put this on the forum as a separate TR in the rest of UK section, so not sure if it needs to be here too.  As always looking for constructive feedback!  It was a quick edit as I was in a rush, but it came out OK.  I think I can now knock out a fairly decent walking vlog consistently.  Getting views seems to be tough though?  Some channels seem to do well off some fairly average stuff, is it just a case of plodding on?

Interesting. I've stayed in Cicera and walked a small section of the Camino there. Would like to have a go at the full section from San Vicente to the monastery at Santo Toribio one day. About a mile or so from Cicera is a mirador (basically a platform attached to the mountain side) overlooking the Desfiladera de La Hermida - spectacular views, especially down to the road a long, long way below. Did you stop off and have a look at the 9th/10th C church of Santa Maria de Lebena?

No comment on the music  :-X

One F, no we didn't go to the church. We were hot and just couldn't wait to get in the cold water right near it.
Day 2 was an alternative route through the mountain pass, otherwise there's a lot of road... sounds boring.

Regarding music... Well we all have different taste. Maybe it's just too fun for you ninthace.

Well I know I started the ball rolling then disappeared, but in my defence..............

I went out for a walk shortly after and felt, well, odd.

So to cut a long story short, I ended up in front of a doctor, then an A&E nurse, then an A&E doctor, then a lady doing ECGs, then a radiographer who does heart ultrasounds, then in a CT scanner, then a cardiologist, then back to the scanner, then back to the cardiologist, who did an angiogram, which led to some startling results, which led to an emergency intervention to fit two stents in my LAD which was an utterly amazing 88% occluded (blocked, which may have accounted for my slowing down going up hill!).  Then 8 weeks after doing not a huge amount, back in for a pressure wire test on my RCA!

For the last 6 weeks or so I have been getting fitter again, but chuffing hell, what a shock.

Look after yourself people  :smitten:

Eek, the stuff of nightmares. I hope it's uphill from here on  :)

I won't bother looking up the unexpanded LAD and RCA, it sounds quite bad enough already.

New video. 3 days is cantabria, spain

Very interesting, I've skied there but never been there in summer, it does look hot.

Music definitely to loud and not that fitting to the contents.

I’m looking forward to maggots video :)

I don't think Maggot's playing, Beefy.
I wonder what happened to the original poster who suggested the thread but didn’t post hid own  :D

I'm on it, I didn't think anyone was interested!

I understand your reasons for not doing the video given your previous health concerns Maggot but now you're on the road to recovery (which is great news, btw) .... crack on  O0

Sounds horrendous, Maggot, good to hear you're mending.
