Reviving Altberg Leder Gris Leather Wax
« on: 17:54:29, 14/02/18 »
I have two tins of Leder Gris. One has cracked and both have gone hard. Is there any way of reviving them as at the moment it's difficult to apply a thin layer. I have tried placing a piece on top of the boiler to warm it but it's not making any difference.

Any suggestions please or am I seeking the impossible?

I think we've been here before just over 2 years ago and your Leder Gris was 5 years old then?  ;) http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=31385.0

As mentioned in that thread the petroleum "oil" content has probably just naturally evapourated/dried out over time and needs to be replaced. The Leder Gris tins aren't airtight like the screw top jars now used by some of the other wax manufacturer's which is causing the problem for long term storage.

It may be worth chucking it in an old pan and slowly melting it then pour it back into the tin and use but as the oil content is the active ingredient which goes down into the leather and replenishes it you may find that the wax just sits on the surface of the leather and offers no real benefit.

You may be on a hiding to nothing but if you've got any of the softer waxes like Meindl Sportwax or Berghaus/Brasher leather conditioner it may be worth mixing some of it in with the Leder Gris to try and replace the oil content. Adding a bit of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly may be worth a try if you've none of the other softer waxes kicking about.

The cheapest place I can find for Altberg's Leder Gris Original Clear/Natural 80g Tin is here http://www.odintactical.co.uk/leder-gris-boot-wax @ £4.50/80g tin with free delivery.

It's probably about time that you treated yourself and your boots and let the moths out of your purse! Not Scottish are you?  ;D

Thanks kinkyboots. Not Scottish but careful with a bad memory. I did buy another tin but this one has also hardened. Unfortunately health problems mean I don't walk as much as I am used to so I don't need to proof my boots so often.

It seems that the tins have a limited life. Will have to let the moths out now  ;D

Interestingly yesterday I was also researching using Leder Gris on nubuck and in a previous thread you posted this link

http://www.staffordoutdoor.com/altberg-bootmakers/altberg-leder-gris where it is £3.96 with free delivery

Doubly helpful. Thanks

When you get the new Leder Gris warm it up to soften it and transfer it out of the tin into an airtight screw top plastic or glass jar (many cosmetic products come in that type of jar). Press it down into the jar to remove any air gaps to try and reduce evaporation and hopefully you should find it lasts a lot longer.

Thanks for reminding me. I can't remember but I think the last time I checked that link they were either out of stock or were charging postage at the time.
