Pooley Bridge to Windermere 2-day backpack
« on: 09:43:02, 02/09/18 »
A linear 2-day north-south hike of the far eastern fells of the Lake District, joining the line of the Roman road at Moor Divock near Pooley Bridge as far as High Street and traversing the Ill Bell ridge to the Garburn Pass and Dubbs Reservoir.

We have walked various circuits of all these fells before, but our new public transport regime allowed an obvious  natural traverse from Pooley Bridge to Windermere station.

The first day was overcast and grey for the very long and gradual approach to Loadpot Hill and the northernmost summits, but the tops were clear with interest in the dramatic cloud patterns. The second day was in glorious sunshine for the more mountainous scenery of the Ill Bell ridge, surprisingly cold for late August at dawn but becoming very warm by afternoon.

Great stuff Geoff O0
The lakes really does lend itself to these sort of linear walks and mostly all doable by public transport.
Great to see Kentmere reservoir has been refilled after the recent work on the dam ;)

Thanks a lot all.
It's a natural route choice from the map. The northern half was a gradual line of least resistance over the high ground for the Roman legions to avoid being ambushed in the (then) tortuous and boggy valleys, a great scenario to contemplate and the only one where I feel any historical interest or connection.

The Parula 2 is an excellent spacious tent once the apparently self-aware pole system is mastered and tamed!.

I wasn't aware of the Kentmere dam work, but it's looking good at the moment at least from a distance, unlike the sad Peak District reservoirs of late.

Indeed it is; a route that I have got my eye on.

Wow that route brings back a lot of good memories :-) That tree at the quarry has a small pinch of my old golden Labrador Jakes ashes sprinkled into the soil at its foot because I remember a  good three hours he crashed there in 2011 after a ten miles walk, groaning at being too warm in the sun but too comfy to move into the shade  ;D

What an odd coincidence, there must be something about that spot, especially the fine old tree, it compelled us to stop too.
