Looking for a nice long-walk!
« on: 16:51:56, 31/03/10 »
Hi there, first of all I'd like to opologize for my english.  :-[

In second place, I'd like to ask you for advice about a nice long-walk. I'll walk in the middle of August and I'd like to find a walk about 125-150 miles, so I can  walk it in 10 days. But, what's actually important for me, is to find a walk where I can sleep al least in villages or bigger, so I can have a beer and listen some music before going to bed, maybe not eveyday but sometimes.
Last summer I walked half the West Highland Way, from Crianlarich to Fort William, and the Great Glen Way, and it was a really nice experience, so I'm looking for something similar, but I think the Rob Roy Way or Cowal Way for example don't passes through any towns.
I've noticed there are lots of Trails in U.K. so, which one would you recommend me?
Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail seems good, but maybe just because is the first I've seen.
Does anybody knows the Kerry way in Ireland?

So if anybody can give me some orientations I'll be very thankful!!!

Here you are some links to my previous walks,

Camino de Santiago (Spain):

I can't give you any advice on LDP's (long distance paths) Jose, simply because I haven't walked any yet - but I CAN welcome you to the forum!  Hope someone comes along with ideas for you very soon!

Ola Jose! Welcome to this amazing forum - I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas. Please DON'T apologise for your English - I don't think there are many of us who could post messages on a Spanish language forum!!

I haven't walked any long distance paths, but if you're thinking about Ireland, take a look at the Dingle Way. The Dingle is the next peninsula north from the Kerry Way's Iveragh peninsula, and is not so busy. Even so there will be enough villages and pubs for your needs, and the people are really friendly.

Website is here
http://www.dingleway.com/index.php

The western end of the Dingle Peninsula is the most westerly point of Europe, and is awesome. It looks out to the Blasket Islands and after that, there is nothing else before America.

A couple of pictures from when we were there in 2008

In general, Ireland has more villages and homes in the countryside than Scotland, for historical reasons to do with English behaviour!!

Pembrokeshire is great too, and I am sure others from here will tell you about the SW England coastal path.

Whatever you do, have a wonderful time!

Paul

Hi Jose, I've not done any LDP's myself but have done quite a lot of the Pembrokeshire coast path in sections and it is a very nice walk. It goes through lots of villages and is quite varied in the type of walking involved. Best of all the scenery is wonderfull.

Whatever you decide I hope you enjoy yourself.

Hola Jose. Welcome to the forum. The following sites are worth a visit for planning your walk

http://www.sherpavan.com/trails/trailselectorrc.asp

and here

http://www.ramblers.org.uk/info/paths/name

might be helpful too.

I have done 2 long distance paths. The Dales Way (NW England) and the Offa's Dyke Path (England/Wales border) both have plenty of remote sections (not as much as Scotland perhaps) but pass a number of large villages and towns along the way (or close by) that might offer you some of the nightlife you are looking for and somewhere to sleep each night. They are perfectly possible to do without carrying a tent - there are lots of Pubs, B&B's and guesthouses along the way.

However, August might be busy - it is the middle of our main school holiday - so you may need to book accommodation in advance. This site might also help - even if you don't use them the website contains lots of useful information:

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!  O0

Hi, I want to thank everybody for your replies, and for your wellcome to the forum. It's always nice to find people so kind.
The links you've posted are being very useful to me, my first conclusion is that everywhere I go but Scotland, I'll be able to easily find where to sleep, hostels, b&b, pubs etc... and that's right because I'm not used to carrying a tent, here in Spain it's completely forbidden to camp wherever you want or need. Furthermore, I'll probably travel alone so I'd prefer to know where I'm gonna sleep.
I liked a lot your pictures, docpaul, specially the first one.
Here in Valencia, (and in Spain) the landscape is not very amazing, you know, the forest have been burnt so many times that there are very little trees left, and the land is very dry  :( .  So I really love your scenery, you have a big treasure, and I'm very surprised of how many paths are waymarked, it's great. Maybe to make a decision is a bit difficult because of so many alternatives!!! I'll keep investigating.
Thanks everybody  :)
I'll come back.

Blimey. The landscape in the part of Spain I visit is stunningly amazing, and green. In fact parts of Cantabria remind me very much of the the British Isles.

Suggestion for a long distance walk over 10 days - part of the famous Coast to Coast Walk but from East to West, starting at Richmond and finishing at St Bees. It is about 130 miles and will take you up the beautiful Dales valley of Swaledale and then across into Cumbria and the Lake District mountains. Plenty of accommodation and rest stops too.

Enjoyed your Camino del Norte journey - that is on my 'to do' list so stick around as I may have some questions about that walk. And you are right, your 2 female companions are 'locos'  ;) .

Hola Jose,

Can you tell me the name of the artist and the track which starts at 3 minutes and 52 seconds into the above video (Hondarribia - Gernika 2/2) - catchy little number  :)

Thanks

One F in Foreigner, that's right, I wasn't very exact when I said all Spain is very dry. The truth is North of Spain: Pais Vasco, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia is really green, plenty of trees, water, streams...there are lots of high peaks, etc...but I live in Valencia, and it's not the same!
I've found some information about the Coast to Coast Walk, it seems very interesting, indeed I'm thinking if I could have the thirteen days I'd need to complete the entire walk.
Anyway, it hasn't been easy finding the Coast to Coast you were talking about, I think there are some people, quite a few, who have walked their own Coast to Coast, I've found some in Scotland, Wales, England.
If you are thinking of doing "El camino de Santiago" I'd tell you I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy it. I've completed twice the "Camino Primitivo" from Lugo to Santiago, 330km (205 miles) in 2006 and 2008, and now I'm with the "Camino del Norte", I've walked 150Km (93miles) in 2009 so I still have 650 km (403miles) left, but I think it'll take some time  :)
"Camino de Santiago" is similar but not the same than your LDP, in general, you don't need to book, most of hostels are free, or 3€ voluntary, for sure you can book in better hostels or hotels, but the nicest thing of El camino is to spend some time having dinner and some chat with other pilgrims. On the other hand, there are several Caminos de Santiago, the best known is Camino Francés, but exist more alternatives.
So, if you need some advice, maps, webs, links, where to stay, where to sleep, what to carry on, etc... I'll be delighted to help you.
The track is: "O Tren" from "Andrés do Barro" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYa0UfsKF2w [nofollow]
Maybe you'll like this trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxD9M3ppQ-M [nofollow]

Dave, I'd like to do them all, just, I think I'd need three or four lifes, or better, to be rich, because with only three weeks a year for holidays, well, I think it's quite difficult, isn't it?  ???
I'll come back.

Can be tricky Ive signed up for the endless reincarnations option tho so im OK  ;D

But en serio I know what you mean. I dont have enought time left to do all the Lake District, and I havent even started on Scotland or Wales yet. I wish i had started in earnest many years ago, but I have always walked. Just never didi the bigger walks till 4 years ago and im 52 now  :(   All we can do is enjoy the ones we have to come when we can - we never know how long we have left. I intend to still be walking in my 70s and 80s but not the heights I can still reach at the moment. ONward and upward como se dice.

By the way the camino de santiago sounds fantastic,,,,

Thanks for the info Jose. I may be able to help with maps for the Coast to Coast (the proper one  :)  the Wainwright one). It is usually walked, west to east, from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay but I thought that with just 10 days you may find it better to walk it in the other direction and finish in St Bees. As I said if the maps will be of help let me know. I can also let you have the log (record) of my Coast to Coast  walk in 1998 (it doesn't seem like it was that long ago).

I am interested in Camino del Norte and have walked one short'ish section. If I remember correctly it was around the  Solares and Lierganes area near to Santander when I walked a section of the Via Verde. I've come across the Camino sign around Santillana. Also saw the Camino sign at Santo Toribio de Liebana just outside Potes - is that a branch from the main Camino del Norte?

Dave, when I was walking the Camino del Norte, one night I noticed there was quite an old man in the hostel, I thought maybe he was sleeping there because he had nowhere to go, just carrying a small backpack. After that he approached to the table for dinner, brought a bottle of wine and some cheese and all the people around the table had a great time. He explained he left from his home at the beginning of may, the only thing is that he was Belgian!!!, he had arrived to Santiago the Compostela, and now he was coming back to his home: walking! So from Belgium to Santiago: 1500Km (940miles) give or take, plus from Santiago to Belgium: 1500km, total: 3000 Km (1900 miles), and the other minor detail: he was 83 years old!!! He taught us a good lesson about our very heavy backpacks and some other things. So, I think you are plenty of time to walk, and walk, and walk... O0

No, that's not a branch from the main Camino, actually, each Camino have no branches. There are several different caminos: Norte, Primitivo, Francés, Portugués, etc... you can see most of them in this link:

here you are a good link to Camino del Norte:

By now, I'm not asking you specific information about Coast to Coast, because I still have to decide which path I'll walk, but thank you for the offer  :) , I'll keep it in mind.
