Recommend me a jacket please!
« on: 22:22:37, 07/12/17 »
Hi

Can I get some recommendations for a jacket? I want it to be:

1. Waterproof
2. Warm enough for walking during the night, but not too hot for walking during the day
3. Have pit zips
4. Be under £200

Thanks!

Thats asking quite a lot for under £200... Most waterproof jackets are designed to have layers underneath to keep the walker warm e.g. fleece. A simple waterproof shell with pit zips for under £200 is achievable if you shop around. If you insist on some warmth from the jacket then maybe look at Paramo? They are warmer than a traditional shell and some people find them Ok in summer also (although I find them too warm).

I have a Paramo Alta 2, but if I wanted a new jacket I wouldn't look at this type of anymore. Nowadays I prefer a single skin jacket (cheaper as well) I get and maintain my warmth by what I wear underneath. A couple or three layers, which I can slip on and off as my temperature goes up and down is my preference these days.. My Paramo is at its worst in the warmer months, the bit of exercise, an uphill section and I'm uncomfortable, in the colder months its not too bad. I tend to only use it now when I stroll into town or go to the pub.

Take a look here http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/ they are always discounting good quality items.
And have a great customer return policy.

Manufacturers like Jack Wolfskin do some more insulated jackets for winter wear:

Maybe something there at the right price?

Thanks, the troposphere seems to tick all the boxes so have gone for that from amazon for £130.

I would strongly recommend using the layering principle with a shell. Any "warm" jacket is likely not to be warm enough sometimes and too warm at other times. With layers, you can adjust.

Agreed.  It's simply not possible to find a jacket that will always cope with a complete walk under varying conditions, taking layers on and off is pretty much inevitable.  If there is such a jacket I haven't found one in over 40 years of serious walking.

I can't see an answer to 2. Warm for night walking but not for day walking.

Too many variables - temp difference between night and day, the absolute temps in involved, how hard the terrains is, how hot you walk, whether you're carrying a pack and what you wear underneath. Only you could possibly work this out and that would take experience.

This is why people tend to wear layers unless it's a walk they know so well that they know from experience that a particular insulated jacket they own works well for it.
