A lovely day in June, 2010 :D
Start Point - Grindleford Station, Derbyshire
The first thing you notice on this walk is Totley Tunnel. The tunnel was completed in 1893 and at 6,230 yards (3.5 miles), was the longest mainline railway tunnel in the UK that ran under land for its entire length!...so now you know! ;)

After following a path slightly NW, the charming Padley Chapel comes into view...
Still heading NW, you're soon walking alongside of the River Derwent, in the direction of Hathersage...

From Hathersage - and after buying some fresh cherries from the grocers :P - we headed North , passing lovely Summer meadows along the way...

Next is one of my favourite parts of the walk, The Warren. 8) The perfect place for a 'banana/cherry' break'! :D

From the Warren, a steady climb led us to Green's House. I would normally head North from there and take the Dennis Knoll track up onto Stanage - but it's a bit of a slog so something a bit different was in order today. Instead, we headed East towards the North Lees Estate, passing through some lovely bits as we went! 8)

The remains of an old Chapel could be seen from our path....

Woodland path through Stanage Plantation...
And then our first close up view of the Edge...
Looks like fun to me.... :D
(http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/archive/data/61/Stanage_Edge_June_025.jpg)
As we made our way towards the rocks for a scramble onto the Edge, I was really chuffed to see a Ring Ouzel on the rocks! :o 8) After taking these pics, we looped wide around the bird and found somewhere else to climb up instead...

From Stanage, we headed across to Higger Tor. (The photo below shows the path onto Higger Tor - but it was taken in the Autumn last year)...
The views are lovely from Higger Tor, especially over to Carl Wark (a Roman Hill Fort), which was our next destination...
And a shot of Higger Tor, taken from Carl Wark....
From Carl Wark we dropped down to Burbage Brook, where we crossed this cute little bridge. Burbage Rocks can be seen behind...

The path then wends it's way alongside Burbage Brook..........

Once out of the gorge, a wide track leads downhill and back to Grindleford Station. On the way, I saw these lovely Clover flowers on a bit of waste ground - just too pretty to ignore :D
Thanks for looking,
Tracey :)

Dave it's about 11 miles, so it's a piece of cake for someone who's off up the hills in the Lakes every five minutes! ;) ;D

Hi Tracey :) this walk looks familiar ;)
-
Lovely pictures - looks like a grand day out. The meadow flowers are just stunning at the moment, aren't they? When we walked yesterday there were loads but sadly my camera (phone) is not adequate to do justice to them.
Pity the cows have eaten that lovely chapel though. ;D
-
Lovely, you've captured the whole essence of your walk there.
I enjoyed looking through those (twice).

Really nice and interesting walk, cheers for sharing

Thanks guys. O0

Wendy and I did this very same walk just a few weeks ago; looking at your photos though, everywhere appears to have greened (if that's a word) up a fair bit since we were there. We really enjoyed this route, even though we couldn't walk the full length of Stanage Edge, because part of it had been close for the ground breeding birds. We will deffo be back to explore more of the Peak District. Thanks for posting your smashing pics.

Excellent report with some smashing pictures. I've never done that route around Stanage, but one for serious consdieration in future.
This year seems especially good for Buttercups, the fields have been packed with them. An example from the fields around Haggside on Saturday.

Wish I'd done this one today, i tried out a 13miler local one, the first 3 miles were lovely through woods and near a reservoir, the next 10 (well i cut it short through boredom) were penury in the heat and just on moorland, i hate moorland yawn yawn yawn :( Nice weather though ;)

Chris
Hi Chris. We did this route on the Peak Weekend I organised last August but you couldn't make it that time.
I'd happily do it again (and arrange a second walk for the Sunday), if there was enough interest.
I'll be arranging another weekend sometime soon too, with new walks that we haven't done yet.
Throw a few dates forward and we'll see what happens.
Tracey :)

Hi Judi,
If we did arrange a weekend, it would be great to meet you :)
Erm, I do use a point and shoot, yes! LOL Glad you liked the photos, although I wish I'd taken more of Stanage Edge now.
