Title: Another Tree Photo Thread
Post by: midweekmountain on 10:52:37, 22/02/17

Last year 13/03/16 we had an excellent thread for photos of trees, unfortunately the original thread has been spoilt because photos have dropped off so I have set up a new one................

So post your tree photos here.

I really love trees! When hiking there is nothing better when resting, than lying under a tree looking up through the leaves and branches. I always find it magical, sends my imagination into overdrive!

I'd love to post a tree but unfortunately have never worked out how to send a photo to the site.

For me generally, either on my phone, or on my PC, I can never get my head around 'photos'. Its a whole subject matter that eludes me.

Good timing MWM.........As they are starting to bud up and will soon become fully clothed.

Saw this topic at lunchtime on my phone and assumed the first pic wasn't displaying properly cos I was on my phone, but now I'm on my computer it still looks the same.  Not sure what's happened but all I can see is blurry yellow and green stripes  :(

Nice naked tree in the snow though BWW, we've not had anything resembling winter here yet  :'(

BWW-Great shot of winter trees is it monochrome?

Mel-Thanks for the feedback.

At the mo I am on a bit of a high with my photography cos the last three comps I have entered I have got an equal first, an outright winner and last monday I got a third place.

One of the first things you learn when you start entering comps is that you can never please all the people all the time. This is especially true when you try to do something different.

After the monochrome comp last monday I was talking to one of our proffessional photographers, she had entered a superb quality A3 print. I thought it was easily the best print of the night, far superior to my efforts BUT the judge had slammed it, I was suprised.

She told me that she had already sold several copies of this print to her clients who loved it so she was not really bothered BUT it just goes to show how fickle folks are.

As I have said before I never put my comp stuff on here so you guys get the rejects BUT I am still always keen to get feedback especially when I try something a little bit away from the norm.

Not monochrome, as took. Might have tightened the levels a bit bit I can't remember, just had it hanging around in Photobucket.
Well done in your photo-comp forays. In my working days I made decor packages for pubs, hotels etc, did some picture framing as I had all the equipment so I can sympathize with the disparity between that which different people actually see. Even if they consider themselves to have a trained eye.

By the way, if we are on trees don't forget 'bark',

Its on Hadrians Wall made famous from the opening clip of the film Prince of thieves where Kevin Costner meets his merry men.

In the Toon if you mention Hadrians wall to any Geordie they always mention Robin Hoods Tree.

Its also home to 2 superb climbing venues, Peel Crag and Crag Lough, when I worked in Newcastle I got to love this area. I teamed up with the locals and spent a couple of after work evenings here each week thro the summer.

A photo of the same tree, looking from south to north is my home screen photo!

My wife has one of her friends daughters (9yrs old) to stay for a couple of hours each Monday afternoon. Two weeks ago I got out a map of the UK, laid it fully open on the floor and then viewed the scene where Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman land on the beach on the south coast. I pointed to the location on the map. The very next scene was on Hadrians Wall near that tree. I pointed to the map again.

The little girl could not grasp the distance gap at all! The film, to her, suggests that the wall is 'just up the road' so she went home very confused.

I think its called 'creative licence', supposed to explain why a painter can put something on a canvas, which bears no relation to the object/scene supposedly portrayed.

Alder catkins from yesterdays walk. One of the more subtle colours of late winter or early spring. Sometimes when the light is right they can turn a whole river bank purple.

Fresh shoots on an old Elder tree. Early attempts to make cigarettes out of Elderberry pith and smoke them put me off smoking for life, perhaps I owe this humble tree a special vote of thanks, also for the Elderflower Champagne (whoops sparkling wine) and Elderberry wine it has provided.

Not sure if I've posted these before.  Linley Beeches in Shropshire is a beautiful spot, planted - so the story goes - to commemorate a victory in the Napoleonic Wars; or by prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars; or by a Robert More in the 1720s.  Whatever the truth, they're wonderful, if showing their age a little.

Ah, I remember WW posted that he had a particular photographic interest in trees.

Curious you post the Linley Beeches on the same day I posted about Walcot Hall elsewhere here;
http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33797.msg491668#msg491668
Perhaps the same gang of french PoWs worked on the Linley Avenue and dug the lake no one than privileged visitors view at Walcot. Sir Jasper More was one of those hereditary landowners, who broke the mould, as a long serving MP for Ludlow he was one of the rare members of the landed aristocracy, who could also claim membership of the human race. He attended every meeting of the Shropshire NFU Executive as a parliamentary observer and was there in the 1960's when I proposed a motion that the NFU, CLA, Min of Ag and user groups form a joint discussion group on the footpath network with the fundamental understanding that not single yard of way be lost. Ironically then the CLA accepted the idea it was the Ramblers who turned it down.

I was living within a few miles of Linley Hall, when he died. the estate past on to an indirect relative I think. Certain 'de facto' bits of access started to disappear, I think this was felt by the organisers of the 24 hr race over the Stiperstones and Longmynd. That was a direct response to the Sarah Slade gospel of access as adopted by the CLA about ten years ago.

Trees can tell a story, perhaps in their ring their are memories and lessons to be learnt.

MWM I cannot recall any memory of a curse on Elder, as the branches can mostly be hollow its value as a firewood must be limited. Most of the folklore I learnt was so long ago I cannot be sure.

Sunnydale, three photos of trees that are very evocative of 'quality of way', irrespective of how easy a path is to walk, I think quality of way is something that walkers know improves and multiplies the variation of their experience. It is the essence of these types of pictures that add quality to a trip report as much as the landscapes.

Though MWM's sunrise is a stunning landscape the part that intrigues me is the gate/style? a the base of the tree, now if this was this was the focus of the picture it would be pointing towards a way I should want to go.

Ahhh !! Easy to be a critic, not so easy to take great photos  :)

And Pleb, Macclesfield Forest is well worth a visit - some lovely walking with a mixture of landscapes.  A favourite walk is from Wildboarclough, over Shutingsloe, drop into the Forest, down to Trentabank and Ridgegate reservoirs, follow the Gritstone Trail to the Hanging Gate pub and round the edge of Shutlingsloe back to Wildboarclough.

The difference between good photography for the sake of photography and a good photograph for the sake of walking. How much difference can a gate make to the subject matter....................so often it can graft into the image the essence of 'quality of way'. A moment to pause, a time to reflect on the use this way has served over the centuries and that decision to have to climb over the b..... thing if it is locked! Which is the right end? the wooden post must be the slapping post and the ancient stone post is surely the hanging post, so our man has paused at the right end............but then they are so restful a place to set a spell (seem to have misspelled stile in the previous post :o  )

We found this view on an obscure footpath up to the Ingleboro clints, I was initially drawn to the wall patterns and almost missed the trees on the hill behind.

They don't look very frozen, need to photoshop them whiter  :P

If we're doing frozen trees, these will do. Not recent but that's not relevant I guess. Taken at Minus 10 degrees.

Sorry it's not very good, I don't pretend to be David Bailey  O0

Curious that you are having an epic battle with photobucket, Dittzzy, have had a similar experience.
Click on the share and it see to take an age, then the copied will not come up and the whole thing seems to have been cranky. I got a bit of a virus scare a few weeks ago, after accidentally triggering one of their intrusive flashing popups, had to sign out and do a complete virus scan and cleaning job. Since I had another virus alert after uploading, but by signing out immediately after using, and making sure I am not signed too long when I am not using PB, it seems to have settled down and the uploads and codes seem to be working fine.

Rather a fun idea with a tree, in Hampton Court where I have been trying to find an 'alternative way'. An interesting variation may be a catch pit cover on a tree stump ::)

Lovely photos. If you focus on the middle of the picture, where you have the upper branches thinned out, you can believe you are looking up through the trees onto an alpine mountain - with snow and rock showing through.
Or is it just too vivid an imagination ?

There's nothing wrong with having a vivid imagination sometimes I.M. I often see things that aren't really there and in fact, it intrigues me how we can distort a scene that is actually real and create a different one altogether!

.............it intrigues me how we can distort a scene that is actually real and create a different one altogether!

Perhaps that is how we generally live our lives - all seeing the same things but in different ways and never realising that 'our' reality isn't the same as the next persons !
A good example is something I read in a book by Ursula K LeGuin (and I'm not a si-fi fan) - called ' The Winds Twelve Quarters':- one of the short stories in this is called ' The Direction of the Road '
It took me a moment to realise what I was reading and it becomes clear that it is a story written from the perspective of a tree, growing at the side of a path/road. The tree is the reality and the creatures it comes across - animals, vehicles and humans are 'muses' to it's existence.
It isn't a serious story but it does make you think about your own reality in comparison to the bigger picture.

Not a good photograph but the subject was interesting. The central image is of a tree that has fallen foul of a landslip and lies across a beck. By a stroke of luck some of the roots are in the water and the tree is alive.
Photo taken in Rannerdale (Lake District).

Remenber Billy Connolly's quote.....There are only 2 seasons in Scotland:
June,  and the rest of the year.

While the rest of Britains trees are blooming and greening up nicely, in this recent photo in Scotland winter is still clinging on.
