"Chapel-en-le-Frith is a dump; as far as I could tell it has no redeeming features, it doesn't even seem to have a proper town centre."

Ouch!  ??? ;D

It's true that there are a few industrial units on the edge of Chapel but it's not that bad - there's some lovely architecture, a couple of nice shops and a small market place. It's never going to set the world on fire and as "towns" go it's a very small one but I quite like it. The buildings seem to me very typical of this northwestern corner of the Peak District.

It seems more like a Lancashire mill town.

Perhaps. I don't really see that myself - with some of the Derbyshire towns a bit further north like Glossop, for example, then I'd agree.

Chapel, of course, is a Norman in origin, founded as a hunting lodge and chapel in the royal hunting ground of the High Peak, and has a rich history long predating the Industrial Revolution.

I think the industrial heritage of New Mills and Glossop, to the north of Chapel, has similarities with that of the Lancashire mill towns.  Have you been to New Mills, Lee? It's on the Hope Valley line and is well worth visiting. It's perched above the wonderful Torrs gorge, which has the spectacular Millennium Walkway.

Perhaps you didn't see the historic part of Chapel, just off the High Street, eg Church Brow?
I like your photos of the Winnats Pass. One of my favourite spots in Derbyshire!
