A lovely half day at a lifetime haunt of mine, lots of choices for walks be them high or low level, pubs, grub, scenery or just a sit on a bench & relax..this place is worth a visit, but not on a weekend...Be warned :) .
My route took me from Reeth to Fremington-Arkle Town-Healaugh & back along the river Swale,9 miles of pleasure.
My 1st "proper" walk in a new pair of boots which i,d tested as slippers in the house O0
Right foot perfect,Left foot slightly less,no major damage, lightweight & comfortable..

Sadly the shop in Reeth has closed down, not surprising having passed many supermarket delivery vans on my drive.

A lovely part of the world, and Swaledale is my favourite - thanks for posting.

Ditto the above. Reeth has an old Yorkshire feel to it somehow.

Yes,a lovely area,1st went there(a whinging pain in the butt kid) in the late 60,s my parents/nan had rented a cottage,no utilities to speak of,no tv,intermittent radio, peed in a pot, fresh milk collected from farm & it was still warm!!,no clear memory of what we did to pass a whole week, but it certainly takes up a place in my heart.
Oh to go back in time, see what a brat i was lol :-*

I'm particularly fond of the mild scramble up Swinner Gill.

I found a geocache up there,an old secret meeting place i believe, the gill was dryish but still a dodgy walk ;)

There's a scramble up Swinner Gill? Whereabouts?

Stay as close as possible to the riverbed the whole way up from the footbridge.
Likewise with East Stonesdale. Although private land, the farmer says it's OK.

That's not a scramble - that's just missing the path which runs a bit higher up! :)
I have seen people struggling up there having been suckered into walking by the Gill. Never thought of it as a route - everyone I have shouted down to telling them there is path where I am have been grateful for the information.

Well we find it to be a scramble, a struggle, even. An enjoyable diversion from the path.
The East Stonesdale (East Gill) route leads us up to the coal pits and on to Tan Hill.

Must confess I have never explored East Gill, looks interesting. I was hoping the scramble in Swinner Gill might have been up towards Hind Hole, another area I haven’t been or is that what you meant? I understood the riverbed you mentioned to be East Grain.

We only attempt these in very dry spells.
We can do East Gill by staying within the "banks".
The Kirk necessitates a wide diversion so we count that as the end of our riverbed scramble. Never been beyond there on to Hind Hole.
East Grain we resort to the new steps now at the waterfall.
