It was day walks again last weekend, the weather stopped wild camping play. This is Sundays walk mind. I didn't take any pics on Saturday for a 6 miler in Gelt Woods, well I hadn't taken my camera. Sunday we drove to Howtown and the twisty road up to the church to do Steel Knotts and Hallin Fell. There was flood water to drive through at Howtown but it wasn't that deep.
Martindale Church from The Coombs
On the way up Steel Knotts using the Steel End route
The paths were saturated and water was running down them. I worried we might get trapped if the flood water got worse on the road.
Steeply up Steel End
You can see the water pouring down the path here. There were a few spits and spots of rain that didn't really amount to much. The wind was pretty cold as we climbed higher.
It a good route up Steel End
Looking across The Coombs to Hallin Fell and Sleet Fell
Howtown and Ullswater
You can see the flooded fields and road in this shot. The level of the lake was pretty close to the road on the way from Pooley Bridge, I wonder after the rain tonight (Tuesday) the road will flood more and be impassable?
The path up the road goes close to a big drop a bit further up from this
On the ridge walk to the summit
It is one of those walks that looks short but seems to be never ending. It took us one hour and 15 minutes to get to the summit.
Pikeawassa pupster
Pikeawassa is the name of Steel Knotts' summit.

Pikewassa and Ullswater
The wind was cold when it blew but the gusts were intermittent and we had quite a pleasant walk.
On the way down the Birkie Knott path
Hallin Fell from the steep part of the path
Lanty Tarn can be seen in this shot. The path drops steeply down a grassy (muddy this time) path and was hard work.
Looking back at the last bit of descent from Birkie Knott
Shafts of sunlight in Boredale
We stopped for some lunch above the church then I cheated and put my pack in the car for the ascent of Hallin Fell.
The view looking back as we climbed
Water was streaming down this fell too.
Place Fell
We walked quickly, I was still concerned we might get trapped by flood water. The water that was running down the fells added to my concern. There were a lot of cars parked near the church we might not get a bed in the hotel!
On Hallin Fell summit
This is Squeaky's 99th Wainwright. We will have to make sure her 100th is a special one.

Looking along Ullswater to Pooley Bridge
We started our descent using the path that heads north east before circling the fell to rejoin the path leading to the car park.
Blue sky above Hallin Fell
It was a shortish walk but I was itching to get back safely along the road to Pooley Bridge. Our walk was Martindale New Church - The Coombs - Steel End - Steel Knotts - Birkie Knott - The Coombs - Martindale New Church - Hallin Fell - church. 4.25 miles with 520m of ascent. We managed to get back without having to turn the car into a boat
