TR Grasmere 1 Feb 20, The Big Day Out
« on: 19:54:04, 04/02/20 »
We went to Grasmere on Saturday. We were taking part in the Big Day Out the protest organised by Houseboats Off Grasmere. See here

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jan/14/mass-protest-planned-over-lake-district-commercialisation?fbclid=IwAR23VP0baSjg1nnqzk1VKpors9l_REsmP7J0gfTS9cfUWwUZZ_cuguk_74c

We got there early, a bit too early, we wanted to make sure we got a parking space. We walked the footpaths through Grasmere for an hour and a half. We had nice weather to start.

On the path near Butharlyp Howe

We had a feeling of deja vu here because it was our second turn on this footpath  :D

These signs were all over Grasmere

We spotted pdstsp and his daughter at the village hall then we mustered at Moss Parrock for the start of the protest. There was a lot of people there and the rain started falling on cue at 11am as we started the march and then it got heavier. I didn't take many photos because of the rain. The A591 had been closed temporarily to allow us to march along it. There must have been about 500 to 600 people taking part in the protest or maybe more.

The protest on the shore at Grasmere

This photo was taken during a lull in the rain near the end.The wind was strong here and everyone got very cold and wet. We couldn't hear the speakers but we continued to stand there, we didn't want to leave before it was over. A lot of people had left by the time I took the photo, it was awful standing in the weather. We braved it for 45 minutes before leaving. A look back and we saw we were only a minute early, everyone else started leaving too. We said goodbye to pdstsp and pdstspdaughter and walked our separate ways to our cars. It was good to be part of the protest and sadly we may have to be out protesting again in the future. I totted up our mileage for the day and we had walked 7.75 miles altogether with not very much ascent.

Not the best walk that you have done but a very important one.

Some nice pics there, April, despite the weather.

Helm Crag looks particularly imposing - my first 'mountain', when I was 7 or 8 years old.

..and well done all for attending.

Nice start to the day, a shame it went downhill,

I have put heavy rain when protest marching on the banned list  ;D

Not the best walk that you have done but a very important one.

It was important, we were there to make a point.

A decent start anyway and a very worthwhile outing, let's hope for a good outcome  O0

I hope it does make would be developers think twice before proposing inappropriate developments.

What an excellent turnout  :)

It was considering the weather  :)

There wasn't even a zipwire!  ::)

What a nice fell to start on  :) I'm trying to think what my first fell was. It may have been somewhere near Allenheads.

And my boots finally gave up their waterproofness - soaking feet at the end.  I was hoping to get them through to spring!  Sat in the office now in my Houseboats Off Grasmere Tee shirt. :)

A good turnout for a good cause. It is a while since I have managed to get to the Lake District, but I still have a soft spot. I believe my first fell was Helvellyn via Striding and Swirral Edges.
