Just been reading all the previous comments. The first things that strike me, lack of experience, seemingly lack of map and compass skills, lack of backpacking skills or experience, fitness. My best suggestion would be to pack your rucksacks with whatever you will carry when you do it, get out and try walking with your pack, gradually increasing distance then you will get an idea of how long you are taking to cover a set distance. Try to find someone who can help you brush up and navigation skills. If you are anywhere near me then i drop me a message if you need help with anything.

Thanks for your post.

Lack of experience is correct, well, if experience means the last 8 years or so. Lack of bag packing skills is also correct as is fitness (not too unfit, just not fit).

However, mapping and compass wise I am decent with both and could navigate myself using a an OS map and a compass quite easily.

I plan on filling my rucksack this weekend and going for a couple of miles walking see how far I get.

ok enjoy your walking. Once you get out with your heavier rucksack you will find out all the rattles and the things that need tweaking. Time yourself over a distance for a rough idea on your walking speed. Normal is about 2 to 2.5mph.

Thanks man.

I did plot my times/arrivals by an average of 2mph, maybe I should edit it to 2.5?

if you want to plot times you can use naismiths' rule

walking rate horizontal - fast 5km/hour, average 4km/hour, slow3km/hour, very slow 2km/hour

Uphillrate - fast 900metres / hour = 15metres in 1 min, average 600metres / hr = 10m in 1 minute, slow 300mtrs / hr = 10metres in 2 minutes.

Add 1 minute for every 10 metres of steep descent

Once you work out your walking rate and uphill rate you can add the figures together for your trip and get a rough idea on time. Uphill rate will require close lookign at contours to work out height gained.

Otherwise work it out from experience

Hi Everyone/Anyone.

Looking for some information.

Should I be phoning campsites before the walk in order to make sure they are aware of our arrival? What information will i need to give? I guess I will just pay by cash on arrival/departure?

Thanks.
