TR - Green Crag (214) 16/07/18
« on: 09:45:29, 25/07/18 »
I hadn't planned to finish my Wainwrights on Green Crag it had just worked out that way. Years ago I had decided not to attempt it from Harter Fell as I had 2 small children with me and the weather was turning nasty.

Harter Fell 2009. It always amazes how young my kids are when I look at old photos. That was the same trip when my son clambered round the chock stone in Lords Rake and I never gave it a second thought that he wasn't old enough yet looking at the picture he is just a kid.

Staying in the lovely Esdale YH meant that we could set off from the door which, for me, makes a walk particularly special. I'll happily drive hours to get to a walk but the joy of having a full English then on with the boots and rucksack and stepping out in to the morning air is really special.
Unfortunately this photo was taken on an earlier trip, when it was sunny. Today the clouds were well down.

Walking down the road from the YH we headed over Doctor Bridge and then right to Lower Birker, a farm house that is being turned in to some sort of mansion with huge modern extensions. You do wonder how they got planning permission.

We took the zig-zag path up the hillside and then continued past Lower Birker Pool.

Looking back down in to Eskdale

At some point between Tarn Crag and Crook Crag we misplaced the path, though we must have been within a few meters of it all the way to the bottom of Green Crag where we picked it up again.

Number 214

My son had asked if I wanted to celebrate in some way on the top but with a long drive that afternoon it wasn't the time for alcohol. We were going to eat our flapjack on the top but with everywhere so damp we just took photos, had a swig of water and set off back the way we had come.

Of course as we dropped down the weather started to clear, I wouldn't expect anything else.

Looking back to the summit

Doctor Bridge again.

We then headed back to the YH where we had our lunch in the porch as there were a few drops of rain.
Then in to the car, the journey taking us on the Ulpha road with great views of a cloud free Green Crag

He does poor sod. It is only an optical illusion that he appears to be far taller than me, as you say he is really shorter.

Thanks Beefy.
I don't have a list of how many I have done more than once, anyway we have my son's first round to finish first.

Nice report Ridge - shame about the views, but it gives us a reason to go back doesn't it?
