GPS Trackers
« on: 12:25:58, 27/09/08 »
Hello all, just looking for some advice from someone who knows more about walking gear than me! I did look though the posts to see a similar topic but apologies if i missed it.

I'm looking for a GPS tracking unit, something where i can keep an eye on where a group of walkers are without having to physically be with them - i'm currently helping to supervise a Duke of Edinburgh award and we want to walkers to be as autonomous as possible but also as safe as possible (obviously!)

i know that you can get mobile phone trackers to keep tabs on people but i'd rather not rely on mobile phones which are flimsy and prone to water damage etc (as i've seen other people note in post about GPS units vs. Mobile Phones with GPS)

Has anyone got any ideas of products that would fit the bill? i'm currently trying to find some on the internet but not having much luck so any suggestions would be great!!

Something like this ? -

Some of their claims are a bit suspect though - apparently the device is so accurate you can tell which room of a house the wearer is in  ;D
I've yet to see a GPS unit that can operate indoors . . . .

Doesn't that rely on a mobile phone though? In fact you've got to have a mobilePC based phone as well and then you need a phone signal of course.

There's the SPOT http://www.findmespot.eu/en/ which uses the satellite phone network so works anywhere in the world. You buy the unit up front and then pay a subscription.

SPOT IS a very good device.  I use it to supervise individuals on courses and it fits the bill very nicely indeed.  If you're just using it in the UK, then you'll have no problems and it'll probably work pretty well anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Manufacturer can't guarantee coverage in the majority of the southern hemisphere, though.

It is a bit pricey for a one-off use as the tracking/location service does require an annual subscription (about €100 I think).  However, if you weigh it up against the cost of what could go wrong, it is a small price to pay.
