Anybody hear this? Twas on the news...........sounds a big one.
-
It started at the weekend and has been getting worse since, they thought they had put it out Sunday night but it flared up again. You can smell the smoke even over here in Tyldesley
-
I live in Stockport, probably about 18 miles away and I left the windows open in my living room last night, this morning you could smell the smoke all over the house. My wife's had to close the windows today as she said its only gotten worse.

Is the pennine way affected in any way...does anyone know??
-
I’m over in Altrincham and we could smell it.

It is very close to the PW, on the section above Crowden, the smoke might be thick I could see and smell it in manchester city centre yesterday
But I don't know if it's walkable at the moment?
-
Looks pretty grim to me - with the peat on fire, it may never be the same again.
-
The National Trail website has an article posted yesterday saying it may be affected between Crowden and Standedge, but doesn’t say it’s actually closed. Don’t think I would fancy walking that bit at the moment though. :(
-
I wouldn't fancy it either with all that smoke. NASA released a photo taken yesterday from their Terra Satellite showing the smoke blowing across Greater Manchester & Lancashire

There is also now a fire on Winter Hill https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/live-winter-hill-fire-moorland-14842549 (https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/live-winter-hill-fire-moorland-14842549)

Could still smell the fire this morning.

I should imagine they will close part of the Pennine Way as it goes across Winter hill.

PW?I think the fire in question is on the Winter Hill north of Horwich and east of Rivington.
Apparently it was arson.

BBC red button news said they have arrested somebody.
-
Just awful, especially if it is arson. Apparently it's come at the worst possible time due to ground nesting birds still sitting on eggs or having very young chicks, and it could take years for the flora and fauna in th earea to recover. Devastating.

And now Ramshaw Rocks/the Roaches :(

Unfortunately I'm not surprised. There has been massive news coverage of the fires, and it's going to be very attractive to anyone who wants to "make their mark" or "have an effect".

What an idiot, as if the emergency services don't have enough to do

Passed this one on my way back from Haworth earlier today :( :

My pic was taken from the A629 Dunholme area, looking roughly north and I've just had a google and the Beeb are saying it is on Catstones Moor near Cullingworth, West Yorkshire (http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/16340837.moor-fire-near-cullingworth-bradford-on-catstones-moor/).

The sad thing is, it's not a surprise. They're like Orcs. Can't abide seeing something beautiful without wishing to mar or destroy it.
-
We tried to go wild camping on Axe Edge Moor nr Buxton last weekend but there was a pickup truck parked on the top when we got there, not sure if it was a farmer or warden protecting against fire or someone protecting Harrier Hawk nests etc?
Anyone know if wardens / rangers would go out like this or was it just a random pickup which wouldn't of cared if we were going to wild camp?
In the end we ended up on Shining Tor and to be fair the views were probably better, so every cloud and all that :)
-
Yeah, weve been getting used to the burning Peat smell for over a week now coming from Saddlewprth and nearby Winter Hill. All roads around Winter Hill have been closed in an attempt to stop the arsonists and free up roads for emergency vehicles. Police are on duty at road heads.
This has lead to a major re-routing for cyclists in this weekends Ironman Triathlon.
Hopefully recent rain has helped but much more is needed as the fire is still burning in the Peat below ground.

And then this later one, that was caused by a campfire - lots of smoke on the A515 between Buxton and Newhaven after that, and apparently smoke smelled in Sheffield :(
