I've now started to plan my Pennine Way walk for 2017, and for others looking to do so and wishing to use b&bs I'd get in soon as I've found that many are already full >:(
-
That must be a more popular time then when we did it this year (end June/beg July), as when my hubby fired off emails to 21 B&bs in January, they all came back with a vacancy!
Are you using Old House Torside as I think you can now only use their own baggage transfer service ( I think they may have had a falling out with Brigantes!)

I sometimes think they say that especially when you are looking for a single room in a place that doesn't have any, as they will make more money from a couple of people than a single (even after single supplement >:( )
There's always YHA's to fill in the gaps. Are you doing it North to South this time?
-
Ha! At least you wont need GPS coordinates as the file you sent me did the job perfectly. Have fun . Even on the most horrible bit between Greg's Hut & Garrigill which as it turned out was THE worst bit to my mind. A couple of months since then and I have not changed my mind.
Don't forget to look at AirBNB if you are stuck I got a couple of hints from that. On one occasion someone let me sleep in a whole holiday cottage for the night in Dufton at the same cost as my previous night B&B. To me the biggest problem was between Tan Hill & Middleton , I ended up going into Bowes, which I didn't want to do, but it was very good at the Ancient Unicorn. this added an extra leg on the journey.
-
There's always YHA's to fill in the gaps.
When I was booking none of the YHAs were free as they were either block booked by adventure companies or YHA were holding them in the hope they could rent them out as a whole.
-

I wish, they are only taking bookings at the moment for those who want to book the whole hostel, they'll only release the accommodation 3 months before if they get no takers >:(
Edit: Just read Ridge's post which says the same thing.
No, I've decided to stick with South to North ;)
-

aye, they did that last year. I contacted YHA who told me to check again after the new year as most of the schools would have finished booking by then. Kinda stuck in the throat that members can't book places as schools come first. :(
If I did the PW again, I'd do it North to South, change of scenery etc

Fox& Hounds at Cotherstone pick up from Baldersdale Reservoir

Yes, that's not a nice stretch O0

This time after some reports about Tan Hill I'm stopping at Keld bunk barns, and Middleton was an issue, but the Fox and Hounds at Cotherstone will pick up/drop off at Middleton so I'm staying there (think that was a tip from someone on this forum but can't recall who)
Edit: Crossed with rural roamer's post !!
-

I did give that some serious thought, but transport wise it's easier for me South to North, and as my second week is over half term I reckoned it would be easier to book accommodation during the half term week the further North I was ;)

half term...might explain the full B&Bs also :D
Finishing at Edale means I can be back home in a couple of hours whereas last year it was a long journey home from KY, spending the night in Berwick >:(
I'm just looking at what I want to do next year O0

Yes that was probably me! Though I think I may have heard about it on here before we booked so someone else must have stayed there too.
We had to arrange pick up time at Baldersdale in advance as theres no signal after A66 but you'll probably be ok from Middleton.
Typical village pub, not modern but clean and one of our best meals, very friendly.

Am doing the PW again in 2017; this time north to south.. Doing it in August and rang the YHA last week to book at Byrness (Forest View), Alston, Dufton, Hawes, Malham and Mankinholes. Got in all of them ok. Maybe because it is School holidays? They have nipped their prices up a bit.
Avoiding Tan Hill staying at Butt House in Keld. Got the rest still to book up. Bellingham, Greenhead, Middleton, Cowling or thereabouts and Crowden area...
Apparently there is a new YH opening up near Hadrians Wall late summer 2017.
John
-
If you walk a bit further than Cowling to the Reservoir near Stanbury, you can get a bus from there to Haworth (YHA there) and then back the next again morning, OR if you feel energetic, walk the extra mileage into Haworth and then next day take the Bronte Trail out of Haworth which rejoins the PW just before Top Withins.
-
There's also a private hostel attached to the Greenhead Hotel O0
Crowden is a pain since the hostel there closed. There is a campsite there, and the Old House b&b, but as I'm planning to get to Hebden in two days I'll be wild camping around Wessenden Head reservoir.
-

I missed this bit earlier, the new YHA (The Sill) has been built where Once Brewed YHA used to be O0 O0
-
Backpack it, then no issues with booking!
-
Yeah, but at 65 I'm not so keen on backpacking as I was ;)
Will wild camp for a few days though as I'm aiming for 15 days again O0
-
Understand that - can't beat it though......done it 6 times and planning a triple back, there and back again! Its addictive - done Pennine Journey a couple of times but somehow doesn't really compare...even though it takes in some of PW. However, it might just be that I'm mad!
-
but as I'm planning to get to Hebden in two days I'll be wild camping around Wessenden Head reservoir.
That's quite a yomp you've planned - only possible given the flags and (much) drier route than the original!
There's an old quarry at Wessenden Head at SE077076 which provides some shelter and remains dry even in wet weather - hard though. You'll have to carry water in from the streams you'll cross getting there. It's a pity the old Skye Inn has been pulled down.
Alternatively, I'd suggest that you cross the Wessenden Dam wall to pick the Marsden Heritage Trail and camp some where along it. It's flat and avoids the steep drop down into the Wessenden Brook valley and climb up the other side. There a nice waterfall too O0 Only problem is that one of the abutments has crumbled so it is now only passable on foot.
-
Cheers I'll look at those suggestions. I was also looking at stopping at Wrigley's cabin.

That's ok, I intend to be on foot ;)
As for the yomp, it's only around 20 miles each day which is no longer than some of the later days so it should be fine O0
-
Whilst on the Malham meet-up I was very interested to find out that a couple of the blokes were staying in pods. When I get the chance I'm going to start looking for pod sites, sounds interesting. I only remember seeing such things when I hiked the West Highland Way.
-
There is Mankinholes Youth Hostel if it is available Sussamb. Got booked in there heading south in August. Plan is also two days to finish but it is a little uneven; about 24 to Torside and about 16 to the finish.
Going to have a look at your Haworth plan Bricam; looks a longish way from Malham though. How was the Hawes to Malham section for you last year? That might educate a view as to how far to walk the following day ( though on a 13 day schedule 20 milers are normal...should know a bit better at my age...just that there were some shortish days last time I did it)
-
Yes I considered Mankinholes but HB fits in better with my overall plan O0
-
Think that’s it now, plan for the PW in 2017 is finalised, at least as far as accommodation goes. Last time I had the help of my wife who was able to pick me up/drop me off for the first five or so days which meant that I was able to stay in just 2 b&bs for those 5 days. This time she’s at work so I’m on my own, which required a rethink, plus a few of the b&bs I used last time weren’t available (closed or too expensive now) and some I’d decided last time I wouldn’t use again. All this has meant that I’m going to be throwing in some wild camps amongst the b&bs, so here’s the plan, would welcome any thoughts from those who know the area better than me:
Arrive in Edale Thursday, stay at Ollerbrook Barn, which is where I stayed in 2012 and highly recommend it.
Day 1. Edale to Crowden plus about 4 or so miles for a wild camp, maybe at Wrigley’s Cabin.
Day 2. Would have liked to stay at Badgers Field Farm, where I stayed last time for 3 nights, but they’re full so a b&b in Hebden.
Day 3. No accommodation at Cowling so plan is to visit Hare and Hounds at Lothersdale, then wild camp somewhere beyond it.
Day 4. Would have liked to use Beck Hall like last time, but too expensive for a single room, so using Miresfield Farm instead. It has mixed reviews but sounds perfect for me.
Day 5. Going to bypass the drop into Horton, and instead take the route past Hunt Pot, re-joining the route somewhere north of Sell Gill holes, and wild camp near Cave Hill.
Day 6. Stay at the Board Inn, Hawes. Last time I used Herriotts, but wasn’t impressed with it, and the Board Inn is cheaper.
Day 7. Hawes to Keld, staying in the bunk barns there. Last time I used Tan Hill, but hearing about the changes have decided to try somewhere else this time.
Day 8. Keld to Middleton, being picked up from there and staying at Fox and Hounds, Cotherstone, who will drop me back the following morning.
Day 9. Middleton to Dufton. The YH there if I can get a bunk, but they don’t take bookings until 3 months before unless you want the whole hostel, which I don’t! Failing that will wild camp.
Day 10. Dufton to Alston, staying again in Lowbyer Manor, great b&b.
Day 11. Alston to Greenhead, staying at the Greenhead Hotel hostel. Used Holmhead Guest House last time but expensive and not worth the money, although I now see they also have a camping barn.
Day 12. Greenhead to Bellingham. Last time I stopped at a horrendous b&b, now closed, so am booked into Lyndale Guest House, which has good reviews and which I tried to book last time but they were full.
Day 13. No contest, Colin and Joyce in Bryness.
Days 14 and 15. Considered numerous options here. Last attempt I crossed the Cheviots in horrendous weather, strong winds and persistent heavy rain pretty much directly into my face, and was slightly hypothermic by the time I hit the hut at Hen Hole. I was therefore keen to allow two days this time, especially having made up a day by doing Edale to HB in two days. One option was to stay at Bryness for two nights, availing myself of their pick up option at the half way point that they provide, but in the end decided I would simply leave late and overnight at one of the refuge huts, depending on the weather. This would enable me to get into KY early on the final day, and adjust plans should the weather demand. Final b&b would be Bluntys Mill, a change from last time as Cross Keys prices have increased substantially.
-
When I did the Pennine Way I popped into the pub in Lothersdale and they introduced me to a man and his wife who allowed camping on their lawn. They had a toilet/shower room adjacent to their bungalow. It worked well for me. Only about 100yds from the pub.
-
When I did Kirk Yetholme to Byrness this year the weather was dreadful! I stayed in the hut for a while to change my wet socks and to get some warmth back into my bones, I could have easily stayed the night there but unfortunately it was just too early in the day so I just plodded on. One horrible wet, windy and cold day!

Ah that sounds good. Don't suppose you have their contact details?
-
I've stayed there a couple of times. Its called Dale End - they let you camp on the lawn and even provide toilet and shower in what I think was an outhouse. The owner makes you a pot of tea also on arrival.....You can just turn up at the Bungalow.
-
The camping barn at Greenhead is the old byer at Holmstead - I liked it. I wasn't a lover of the hostel at Greenhead, its a bit large and has an empty feeling about it......but that's my personal view. It does have all the facilities though....

Me again....Lothersdale is Mrs. Foster - 01535 632744

Thanks. I might rethink that then O0

Fantastic. Much appreciated O0

Just a point about Youth hostels Jon. I booked six hostels for my north to south in August next. Did it by phoning the main YHA helpline. They booked all of them for me ( plus three on the last leg of my SWCP in April). Really helpful; sorting out all the food etc at each place. This included Dufton. Did it about a fortnight ago. My only thought was that Dufton can be a bit of a bottleneck if you leave to too late.
Interestingly, the places at Torside and Middleton where I stayed heading north last year wont take bookings until Jan 3rd so I might just look at your Cotherstone option. It is quite a long day to Dufton so they must be dropping you off fairly early?
Just a question Your Advocate. I am thinking about stopping at Hen Hole hut overnight, having travelled up earlier in the day when I start from KY; then doing the 18 miles to Colin and Joyces, but presume it was Lamb Hill you stopped at? How long did a bad weather crossing take you?
John
-
Took me 12 hours in bad weather. ..
Thanks for the other info O0
Didn't find the Dufton leg too arduous although hated Falcon Clints. Planning to avoid them this time by heading up to the reservoir.
-
Re: Lothersdale. Sorry. I have no contact name or number for the bungalow. All I can suggest is to make contact with the pub landlord.
-
I have - it is as per previous post by me.....
-
We stayed this year at the following places you're booked into:-
Ollerbrook Barn, Edale - great start for the walk
Miresfield Farm, Malham - could certainly do with updating, but was clean and very friendly, decent breakfast. Fine for walkers I suspect the bad reviews are more from tourists.
Fox & Hounds, Cotherstone - as mentioned in previous post
Lyndale, Bellingham - great B&B, very helpful, it was here someone walked off in hubby's boots and they made a lot of phone calls to sort it out for us, even offered to lend him a pair of boots, sadly the size was no good
Forest view, Byrness - no words needed, as wonderful as everyone on here said it would be.

Cheers Sue, very useful O0

Hi if you don`t want to camp we do the 2 night stay with pick up for `north to southers` as well. We don`t usually do it from the bunkhouse but I would make an exception for one of my virtual friends. If you are interested ring me to chat. Joyce

sussamb.i am backpacking near the end of may and i'm 76.i'll take 21 days though.

Just FYI I'm booked into all of those ;)

Hi Johny, The Auchope Hut 2 is roughly 8 mile in from KY, and the huts roughly 10 miles apart, so 10 miles from Hut 1 Lamb Hill to Byrness. My first crossing was against a strong heavy rain headwind and took around 12.5 hours, stopping briefly in both huts for a brew and change of layers.
-
That sounds exactly like my crossing in 2012. See my blog
http://penninewayat60.blogspot.co.uk
-
Am now all booked up for a 13 dayer (13th to 25th August) Dave. Joyce has kindly offered to pick me up halfway en route south if they still have a bed or I can stay at the first refuge hut or do the full section as day one. The refuge huts looked pretty cosy in summer at least when I was last there and it would allow me to arrive fairly late in the day at KY. Still undecided. As I think about it; N- S seems to have a different feel about it; but it feels the right option as I only did S-N in 2015 What do you reckon?
Looking forward to it now. The three B&Bs I booked all report more PW interest this year (may be the Spine effect). I imagine you cant wait Sussamb after 5 years away from it!
Still got 200 miles of the SWCP to finish beforehand however; a good few ups and downs
-
Yes, Sussamb, I read your blog, very well put. My experience was the same, from north to south, the rain, wind and fog lasted all day. That stretch of the Pennine Way, in bad conditions, can certainly test ones resolve, energy and the desire to carry on living or not!
-
I imagine you cant wait Sussamb after 5 years away from it!
You're right, can't wait O0
Seems to be taking longer to start this time, mainly because far less planning to do ;)
-
That's very true. Took a bit longer for me as I am going the other way, but in all, about a quarter of the time I spent the first time round.
Even less effort on the SWCP. Have booked a couple of hostels for the last stretch at Lulworth Cove and Swanage; but apart from that am pretty much going to turn up and go. Of course; passing through well populated ports and resorts helps ;D
Are you making any major itinerary changes to last time other than splitting the Cheviots?
-
Yes, to make up the extra day I'm doing the stretch from Edale to Malham in 4 days rather than the five I took last time. Other change is more wild camping and less b&bs.
-
Train ticket to Edale now booked :) .
Last time I had to jump through hoops to get the cheapest fare but it seems the train companies have made some changes, got a ticket from London to Edale for £23 rather than around £80 just by booking early O0
And Dufton YHA now released their weekend dates in May so I'm all booked up with accommodation, less the 4 days I'm planning to wild camp.
-
Following with interest. Love the rail fare cost!
-
Always nice to read about people getting excited about upcoming LDW's and keep us updated...just makes me want to do it again :D
-
God bless the senior railcard and early booking! Managed to get Poole back to York for £29 on the 14th may. York to Plymouth on the 2nd a bit more at £43 but still good. Not sure how to get up to KY as yet in August.
Forecast is deluges of rain in May and a PW heatwave in August......so I guess cloudy and overcast all the way in the event 8)
-
Don't have a senior railcard as hardly use the train ;)
-
Even better price then! This is a good time of year. Once into March, the anticipation of the summer's trails really begins to build. Got some new boots to break in; some accommodation to book...its all good :)
-
Today the low fares for the return trip from Berwick-upon-Tweed were released so that train is now also booked. Didn't get as excited as I did when booking the trip to Edale though :(
Planning to raise some much needed cash for Sussex Search and Rescue so if anyone can help either by donating or spreading the word it would be much appreciated :)

Pennine Way - fabulous - lucky you
-
Amazing box arrived today from a company called BeyondTheBeatenTrack http://www.beyondthebeatentrack.com/ who I've used occasionally before, and so I wrote to them asking if they'd help out on my Pennine Way walk as I'm raising money for Sussex Search and Rescue. I expected perhaps a meal or two but have been sent this lot:

Also thanks to jimbob who has made a generous donation to my JustGiving page

That is quite amazing isn't it..what great folks they are.

Chilli beef and fruit explosion. Is that a new laxative for walkers? ;)

Chilli beef and fruit explosion. Is that a new laxative for walkers? ;)
I'll let you know later ;D
-
That lot will add some weight :) bet you want to take it all though!
-
Sure will ... most though will be used during my training walks O0
I'll only be taking some of the snacks and 6 of the main meals, most of which I'll be using early on as that's when I'm wild camping on alternate nights rather than b&b'ing totally, which I am doing in the latter half of the walk.
-
Less than 4 weeks to go. Did 12 miles across the Downs today and feel great. Got my weight down over the last 3 months from 83 to under 77 kgs so that's a fair bit I don't have to lug around ;D
Pretty much hit my target of raising £500 for Sussex Search and Rescue (£15 to go) so if anyone fancies pushing me over it please feel free :)
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Penninewayat65
-
Not long now then! Glad the training's going well. We start Offa's Dyke on 2 June when you finish the Pennine Way. Lets hope for a month of decent weather! I don't seem to have got so many walks in as last year when we did the Pennine Way, but am up to 10 miles and should increase that and get 2 days each weekend from now plus a weekend in the Peak district.
-
Good luck on Offa's Dyke, I see you're staying at Drewin farm, good choice, the only pain going N-S is the climb from the farm at the start of the next day!
-
I am still NOT jealous at all :P

Well this time in 2 weeks I should be reaching the Kinder plateau. Pleased to say I've reached my fundraising target for Sussex Search and Rescue, so thanks to those who contributed :)
Still time for more donations though O0

had a little walk up bleaklow last sunday and it was mega dry, even the little pockets of water up there had dried up. was nice to walk up without slip sliding everywhere. O0
-
Thanks, very useful ... I've been watching the long range weather forecasts and so far looking good, if it stays that way it will be a totally different walk to last time I did it O0
Just been packing my sac, comes in at 13kgs without food and water, so happy with that, especially as I've been dieting since January and have dropped my weight from 83 to 76 :)
-
wow, mine was about 13kgs with food and water when i started and it hurt, come the end it was more like 10kgs and id lost a stone in weight. While we were up bleaklow it got all the memories coming back and im soo jealous you've only got a week to go, i don't have any walks planned. :-[ . If we dont have any prolonged spells of rain then the going should be real good. O0
-
I could get mine down quite a bit as I'm taking some stuff that could be left behind, but I like to cover all eventualities so for example am carrying two phones and two GPS :)
I've been walking for the last few months with a 15kgs pack so quite happy with that weight and it was pretty much that when I last did the PW.
-
Not long now, I can't even pretend I'm not jealous.Have a great time and take lots of photos to share when you get back.
-
Cheers O0
-
Not a good omen, woke this morning with a sore throat and hacking cough, caught from my daughter, that has been getting steadily worse during the day :(
Hopefully with another 5 days to go before I actually start walking all should be okay :-\

Better to get it now and have 5 days to recover than getting it when you first start. I got a cold at the start of a West Highland WAy walk, had it most of the journey, couldn't walk and breathe properly.
I'm also jealous and looking forward to your updates. I imagine you're into the "this time next week " mode O0
-
I imagine you're into the "this time next week " mode O0
How'd you guess ;D
Sure am ... And watching now the 10 day forecast as I'm within the window ;)
-
Tell you what sussamb, I reckon it will be pretty dry underfoot regardless and you know the wet bits to avoid. Just got to swanage from Plymouth. No rain at all in 11 days from Plymouth. Track is cracked and rock solid. Admittedly a couple of hundred miles south of edale. Long term forecast looks dry for August when I do the PW.
A few days walking will sweat out the cold.
Let us know how the track is as you go
John
-
It's certainly going to be drier than when I did it in 2012. We had a really wet period leading up to my walk and the flags on some of the paths were 6 inches under water :D
Will try to post reports as I go O0
-
Good luck sussamb. Bad weather seems to follow us around on LDWs! So you'll probably be fine as we don't start Offas Dyke until June 2nd! ;D
-
Have a great time, O0
-
Cheers guys O0
-
Have a great time!
-
Thanks!
Just had a final weigh in of the pack, fully loaded now with fluids and food, comes in at 17kgs. That should drop quite quickly to 15kgs by end of day 3, and 14 by end of day 5 O0
-
Thanks!

Good luck.I hope the weather improves a bit. O0
Pack weight sounds good. Why not add a rock at Edale and round it off to 40lbs? ;)
-
Cheers. Weather's looking okay at the mo, maybe a few showers but nothing too serious ... think I'll skip the rock ;D

I'd be interested in reading your kit list if you have time.
-
Just got this and currently in Nags Head, Edale :)
I'll do a kit list when I return, but very similar to last time, although as wild camping for 4 nights I've added sleeping bag, mat and tarp, plus 7 meals. Dropped a few items of clothing I took last time, and reduced my first aid kit.
-
Bon voyage - have a great time :)

Have a good time...I'm still not jealous :-p
-
I know you're not ;)
-
Have a great time. Hope the rain stops for you.
-
Have a good'n sussamb, I hope the weather is kind O0
-
Forecast looking good O0
-
Sitting in Stubbing Wharf in Hebden having a pint and about to feed my face. 42 miles in two days just about finished me off, but should get easier from here in that walks shorter and pack about one kg lighter O0

Don't be filling your pack at Aladdin's Cave tomorrow and watch out for the Top Withins tourists taking up all the benches before and after the house ;-)
-
Hebden Bridge in two days is very strong walking, especially with the load you were carrying. O0

Agreed, I did it from Torside to Mankinholes and I was almost done in. It probably didn't help that I was looking forward to a rest and a pint at the Whitehouse pub on the main road before the reservoirs but when I got there I found it wasn't open during the day, so I was parched. Made up for it later at the Top Brink pub in Mankinholes though O0

Great to hear from you, keep us up to date with how and where you are if you get the chance.

Was today as I passed at 1145 ... had a lovely pint. Last time it was shut though.
Only downside was that while I was there the rain started and continued til I reached HB.
-
Now reached Malham. No more rain and so far not too hot. Looking forward to fountains fell and pen y ghent tomorrow O0
-
Give my regards to PYG and Ribblesdale, been down 4 times so far this year with 3 days of successful walking under my belt. Lovely part of the world and some great views to be had if the weather is kind. Enjoy O0
-
Looks like weather should be perfect ... will be glad to see the views compared with last time when the fountains literally fell while I was on it ;D
-
Good to hear you are enjoying it and weather is so far good. Your last Fountains fell experience sounds
like ours, we made an early start to at least get over Malham cove before the bad weather forecasted and it hit just as we were going up fountains fell. How was Miresfield farm?
-
Now in Hawes. Cloudy day today until around 12 then the sun hit O0
Miresfield Farm was fine. Not a modern style B&B but all the basics are covered. They even have wifi ;)
-
You have been blessed with some good weather sussamb O0 42 miles in two days :o I think my PW would have ended there! Enjoying your updates and I hope the nice weather continues :)
-
My abiding memory of Hawes is arriving to find the town full of old people on coach day trips! Made me feel young again for a short while!
-
Now past Tan Hill but it's a very hot day!
-
You must be at the Fox at Cotherstone tonight then? Very friendly, decent meal, big rooms and we had a spa bath. I do believe we were very wet when we were picked up, you'll probably be hot and sweaty instead!
-
Correct on all counts O0

Shame the parrot that sat outside the Gents has gone, I used to enjoy talking to him. They keep a good pint at the Fox, enjoy. Also try the fruitcake with Cotherstone Blett.
-
Now at Alston. Day of two halves. Low cloud and wind made climb to Cross Fell very cold but once past Gregs Hut and below the cloud a warm walk. Reinforced how much I hate the walk down to Garrigill O0
-
What were conditions underfoot like enroute to greenhead Jon?
-
Wet wet wet ;D
-
Wet wet wet ;D
I really dislike the leg from Alston to Greenhead - so the last few times I have walked the PW, I have used the South Tyne Way - I was a purist once, but having done it so many times now I find this route leg much better and it does have some interesting parts.......
-

O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0
I hated those few miles moire than any walk I've ever been on.
-
Keep going Jon, hope all going well
-
Cheers Phil. Yep, no real issues so far O0
-
You must be in Bellingham today or tomorrow? Give them our best wishes at Lyndale. They'll remember us from last July if you mention Sue and Keith and the mislaid boots! They went above and beyond the call of duty making many phone calls to track Keith's boots down while we headed off to Byrness in the "wrong" boots. As did Colin at Forest view, cleaning both pairs of boots!
Enjoy your last few days, we're nearly ready for the off. A few days ago it looked like the weather was going to be around 16 deg, light winds and sunny. There now seems to be a few rain symbols around!
-
There now O0
I'll mention it to Ken later!
Edit: They both remember and say hi back O0
-
There now O0
Enjoying reading your posts while on your PW, good luck & hope you enjoy the last 'few' miles.
I was in Bellingham a few weeks ago and thought it seemed a really nice village (small town ?) and one I hope to return to.
-
After a lovely stop with Colin and Joyce at Byrness on Wednesday and overnighting at the hen hole hut I'm now drinking tea in the Border Hotel. Lovely day on the Cheviots yesterday although a bit wet this morning.
Very very dry up there though in complete contrast to when I did it last time when many of the slabbed paths were inches deep in water.
-
Congratulations - it's a great walk and the weather can make it or break it. I've done it in varied conditions, but when it's wet, it is very wet!
Enjoyed your updates as I could picture each and every one making me envious. However, my trip is due to start on 20th..........I'm sure you'll soon be planning your next one..
Are you staying in Kirk Yetholm overnight or travelling back today?
-
Yep staying overnight. Just had my free half pint in the Border Hotel. ... working my way through another pint now O0
-
Congratulations!
-
O0
-
Well done Jon, O0 wish I'd been there with you.
Really enjoyed it last year.
-
Congratulations sussamb O0 Pleased you got a good day over the Cheviot section and always much easier when it has been dry for a while :)
-
Well done sussamb. I'm looking forward to doing a small part of it whilst I am in the Dales next week. I'm not sure I could do the whole thing though!
-
Thanks all. Once I'm home I'll get some photos posted O0
-
Well done, Jon. Looks like April & Beefy may have beat a path through Northumberland especially for you last weekend
Hope you raised much more than your target.
-
Now.....time to think about your next project lol
-
Hope you raised much more than your target.
Yep. Think I beat it by around £200 O0

Well done! O0
Haven't had much internet since starting Offa's Dyke! Now done our 4th day, see other post!
-
We booked in January for the Malham to Middleton in Teesdale section which we completed on 2 June 2017. We had a twin room though. Used YHA at Malham and Hawes, Women's Holiday Centre at Horton in Ribblesdale (only available to women and children though), Bunkbarn at Park Farm in Keld (there was a chap on his own walking the Heriot Way staying there), and twin rooms at Ancient Unicorn in Bowes and Old Barn B&B in Middleton.
Looks like we might have to book earlier for next sections.
Well done to Sussamb
-
So what about these wet bits Sussamb?
-
Hardly any. In fact even the Cheviots were so dry you could walk over most of the boggy bits O0
-
Happy Days :). As long as it doesn't pour down for the next two months it should be fun. May even stroll over Padon Hill and Sleightholme this time!
-
Well done btw. Guess the weather made it more enjoyable this time? plus knowing where you were going ;D

Well I knew where I was going last time ;)

Does HebryDef live under a bridge, does he know this is a walking site, does he know what the Pennine Way is? The answers to this and many other questions regarding the recent spate of nonsensical posts from "new members" are all in the twilight zone.

If anyone`s planning a 2018 Pennine way in B&Bs and hotels they need to get a wriggle on with booking especially if it is May or June as there are whole weeks in May that we are over 3/4 fully booked already and It`s not just us, I have spoken to some of the providers in KY and they have noticed it as well. So it seems that the damp (slight understatment) conditions of 2017 haven`t put anyone off.
