It was a late start for the first walk of the year on New Year's Day. I drove a few miles to Jockey Shield to walk into Geltsdale and go up Talkin Fell.

On the bridleway to The Greens
Some ponies in a field
They were like statues, they didn't move a muscle!
The Tindale Fells and Tindale Tarn from near Talkin Fell
I'd seen nobody for the first couple of miles... then there were lots of people about for the rest of the walk
On Talkin Fell summit
There were no views to be had across to Lakeland it was all claggy. It was windy up on the top so it was a quick photo then away again.
Looking back at The Greens
This is a very remote dwelling in Geltsdale.
On the bridleway to High Hynam
Lots more people about here too, it seemed everyone had come here for a New Years Day walk; I've never seen it as populated here! I had planned to walk further into Geltsdale before coming back via Geltsdale Cottages but it was all claggy there so there didn't seem to be much point. I cut the walk short and headed back to Jockey Shield.
The view from the layby at Jockey Shield
I had a quick bite to eat in the car, there was nowhere that was out of the wind or away from other people on the walk so I waited until I'd finished to have some lunch. Not a bad walk, surprisingly busy as mentioned, there was one group of about 30 walkers on the way up from High Hynam on my way back down
The route was Jockey Shield - Low Hynam - Talkin Fell - The Greens - High Hynam - Jockey Shield. 4.75 miles and 520m ascent.
