Walking in Madeira
« on: 13:02:44, 05/06/13 »
Hi we're off for a week in Madeira on Friday.  Planning on doing a bit of walking as well as sightseeing.  Anyone on here been, can recommend any walks?  I know that most of the walking is on the levadas.  I've picked up the Sunflower guide from the library but realised it was printed just before they had the mudslides and forest fires in 2010 so it probably won't be of much use.  The owner of our accommodation has some books though so hoping they'll be more up to date.  We're staying on the South Coast between Funchal and the west coast.

I have done a bit on Madeira some time ago.

1) Ponta De Sao Lourenco was good.

2) Pico Do Arrieiro as long as you are OK with steep drops.

The above might be a problem if you do not have a car. If you are driving, watch out for a tunnel on the north coast road somewhere. It is quite long and single track - which can be interesting!

This might be too late, but I went to Madeira a couple of years ago and I was (unfortunately) unable to hike (on a hen do), it seems like a beautiful walking location. I did notice a lot of quite cheap hiking/walking tours though from many different walking operators, different difficulty levels. I have no idea if they are any good, but may be an option if you do not have a car etc, as it can be difficult to access places.
