Title: Brilliant Binnian: the must do mountain of the Mournes
Post by: henryb on 20:25:54, 01/07/18
As the glorious sunny weather continued, Saturday's walk saw me take in my favourite Mourne mountain, Slieve Binnian. Slieve Binnian is the third highest in the region and the biggest mountain in the range. Starting from Carrick Little car park, I followed the Mourne wall to the south tor. This is a gradual climb on a foot trail which has been improved in recent years. Upon reaching the south tor, views opened up of the western Mournes, Slieve Foye and Slieve Gullion. After a short lunch break I traversed the ridge to the north tor before making my descent to the foot of Lamagan. The back castles is the finest walk in the Mournes and can be completed in 45 minutes. Turning right I headed back to the car park via a good track, completing a circular route of 10km. Before driving home, I stopped at Carrick cottage cafe for a milkshake.
