Title: Wechsel tents anyone?
Post by: richardh1905 on 23:17:24, 01/06/19

Anyone have any experience of Wechsel tents?

Their Exogen 1 and Pathfinder tents are of interest to me.

Exogen 1 = 1.48kg
Pathfinder = 2.43lg

I'd narrow that choice down if I were you!

I'm aware of that, Fernman. Weight isn't everything if you are planning to wild camp up high in the winter. But it is a factor. :)

I'm after a 1 man, 4 season wild camping tent. I have to say that the Terra Nova Southern Cross 1 is the front runner, but I'm balking a little at the £400 price tag.

Also interested in the TrekkerTent Saor, but this is undergoing a design change, and getting information on this has proved difficult!

Outsiders are the Wild Country Helm 1 and the Nordisk Svalbard SI.

I’ve never heard of them so will have a Google but I’ve just bitten the bullet and got a Hilleberg Niak off EBay which arrived yesterday.
It probably cost more than you want to pay but I think I got a bargain at £580 brand new.
I put it up in the house as it’s free standing and there’s plenty of room for one and two at a squeeze.
It only weighs 1.70 Kg including poles and pegs.

I have never come across them but, having looked at their website, I'm quite interested. The Exogen looks like quite a muscular little tent for under 1.5 kg IMO. The Pathfinder really does look up to winter conditions at high levels on first viewing. The video about the Exogen on the Wechsel website is in German but is very thorough. I guess for you it's the old weight versus security in harsh conditions debate - as well as cost of course. Safety first is my way.

Much as I would like a Niak, I really would struggle to justify spending £580 on a one man tent.

Do let us know how you get on with it though, maybe I will change my mind and find the money!

Indeed. I'm not planning to camp on top of the Cairngorms in a storm, but it is easy to get caught out by unexpected bad weather.

I certainly will and hopefully I’ll be in Borrowdale Wednesday overnight on High Raise or Angle Tarn so will have a bit of a test with it then.

I look forward to that, Taxino8; have a good camp! :)

..although if I am being honest with myself, there is no way that I am going to be paying £580 for a one man tent.

The more that I learn about the Nordisk Svalbard SI, the more I like it. A real toughie yet only 1.7 kg, big enough to sit up in, has nice features such as a double layer mesh/solid door, and I've found it for £220 (https://www.outdoorgear.co.uk/Nordisk-Svalbard-1-SI-Tent-sku51155001.asp) on the net. Only downside is that it is inner first pitching, but I can live with that.

But the search continues - I'm in no rush.

For a bombproof miuntain tent, I like my Trango 2. But it's definitely one to share the carrying of!

Nice tent, but not really what I am after. 4.4kg is quite a load for 1 person, and the £600 price tag is enough to make my wallet tremble!

Dragonfly 2 is a lot lighter and pretty robust. I use it as my go-to one man tent (even though it is officially for two).

I finally got to use my Niak this week up at Angle Tarn Gill, here’s a very short video I made.
Quality is crap, I’m no pro and I was only muttering to myself but you can see the room inside of it.
It was a doddle to pitch, there wasn’t any wind so can’t comment on how it would perform in that but I certainly appreciated the room it gave me.

When you said "Quality is crap" it took me a while to realise you meant the video and not the tent  ;D   But the video's not that bad, you're just being modest.

Thanks, I actually had some of me putting it up but that was so bad that I didn’t bother posting the link to that as I’d get laughed at too much.

I thought the same, so didn’t bother going to the video.

Well I understood what you meant, taxino8!

Nice tent - but way beyond my budget I'm afraid.
