Not True - with all the flagging a greater proportion of the PW is paved.

Outside of Worcester at the start and Brighton/Shoreham and the finish the only major tarmaced stretches are through Birmingham and Bristol. The late Trevor Anthill who devised the Monarch's Way avoided roads wherever possible, sometimes zig-zaging wildly to do so.

Its use of minor footpaths is what makes navigation difficult in walker hostile counties such as Somerset - often there is no visible route on the ground. Landowners frequently removed all public footpath signs let along named trail waymarking.

The difference as you cross county boundaries can be amazing.

That should give him enough time, hope he makes it.  There are medics at both huts and numerous safety teams up there now so he'll be watched and assessed carefully.

He appears to be moving very slowly, looking at his tracking points. 20 minutes to cover only 250 metres.

He's up the steep bit out of Byrness now. I hope he makes it having dragged himself all this was.

I am looking in every now and again - but the laptop is about to run out of juice.
I'm a bit worried about Emiko - I assume she's bivvied down, but I'd have thought she'd want to be moving by now...

I hope he makes it but things don't look good at the moment.
As I understand it Emiko has retired at hut 1.

Is that where her tracker is now? I must admit to having lost track of Hut 1 this year!!!

I'm watching too. Don't think that Satoshu Funakoshi is going to make it unfortunately, he's just moving too slowly.

I think that there is a refuge hut there, so she's not out in the open. Edit - Lamb Hill refuge hut.

As I understand it Emiko has retired at hut 1.

That's a pity, tonyk. So close.

Painful to watch isn't it, poor guy.

She hasn't updated for so long either her tracker isn't working or it is not with her any more.

The section he is on can be a bit tricky to navigate in the dark/fog as you leave the border fence. He has got the right line so it indicates he is still thinking clearly which is a good sign. When people become hypothermic and walk very slowly they are often confused and have problems with navigation.
     Emiko retired in hut one.

By my really rough calculations Satoshi is managing about 1km/hour at the moment.

Its pretty slow stuff but he seemed to be moving okay in the earlier video that was filmed in the dark.He said both legs and a hand were giving trouble and pain killers were not working but he was determined to push on and was in good spirits. He has until 10am tomorrow morning to finish as he was given a two hour extension for staying with and assisting a runner who had collapsed. Its going to be tight but provided the medics don't pull him he might make it.
Edit:It seems he has retired at hut one. :(
