There are still some parts of the ancient Caledonian Forest in existence. These have. A lot of Scots Pine, but also some deciduous trees. Being a natural forest, the trees are not closely planted in regimented lines. Rare wildlife is found here, including red squirrels, pine martens, capercaillie and wildcats. These are very different to the dark oppressive plantations and well worth a walk.

Just walking the southern upland trail.
The blue bells in the woods are a spetical to all.
Glen trool area especially beautiful.
The short window of blue bells is an experience in the right conditions inspiring.
As for the dark conifers woods I agree with the other posters.
