I think that you are going to have problems with condensation inside your 'Champion' jacket, gunwharfman.

Extremities have a Goretex pair for less than £30, and boy are they high quality items.
My friend who is a recent convert to walking, bought a pair in Bettws Y Coed.
The Extremities cost him £25, and looked bullet proof in manufacture, so well made, that i recon they would last for many years.

If you do need gaiters, then their worth a look, and will not blow the bank.

I made a mistake, sorry! I believed that my present Rab gaiters were Rab Latok's and believed until this morning that Rab Alpines were an entirely different model. I was wrong.

I took my Rab gaiters to a shop today with the idea of buying some new ones. The staff explained to me that the Rab's that I own are actually Rab Hispar's! I bought them for £25, they are now around £45, the Alpines are nearer £50. In the end I decided not to buy, I'm going to look at some other makes before I decide to part with my cash.

Never had an issue with my Gaiters, Rab Alpine latock or berghaus Extreme. If raining i wear them beneath my over trousers so water doesn't get in via the top. A nice tight snug fit around my shoes, nothing gets in from there either even if i have to splash through streams, only get wet legs and feet if forced to wade in knee high or higher water.. Some dampness through perspiration yes, same as Goretex and other waterproof breathable jacket but wet through rain, never.

Yes, overtrousers over gaiters is a pretty unbeatable combo.
