Check his walks against Hanzard  ;D . Long way from Dartmoor to Westminster. Though perhaps Rory could do it  ::)

I have read his book about his walk.  A very good read IMHO and his adventures along the way show that he is quite an extraordinary individual, capable of tolerating more than a little hardship and having buckets of sang froid
Perhaps we should see him as a potential ally. Too often the socialist thinking that dominates 'The Ramblers' clouds the issue that our network of footpath into the countryside is a national capital asset. To maximize this asset we need politicians of all political persuasions to recognize it's social and economic value. Throughout Teresa May's premiership did one political commentator question her on the 'Corruption of the Definitive Map', lostways or even the budgets cut to rights of way and yet she took several well publicized walking holidays.

Perhaps Rory Stewart should come to Shropshire, a county you cannot walk across despite being the largest inland county. Well if you walk across it, your routes will be rubbish compared with the routes that should be available, to encourage those in the cities of the Midlands to walk to the Welsh coast.

Now we are told  that a few hours in our countryside will be good for your mental health, yet one landowner is having a nervous breakdown about keeping his estate private, whilst one of his tenants complains that living on his estate is like being in a POW camp.

I just wondered about the man. No more. And this from the press and not from his book. He might be a very fine fellow, but his walk sounds Olympian to me given the garb I see the professional shot taken of him striding through the local terrain. Think on this just a little while. I could be wrong.

Most recently and feted was the moving account of the 93 year old Battle of Britain pilot who fought the Nazi bombers. I think they eventually caught up with him and shot him down over Holland or so. He's been at many ceremonies and been given many awards and which has won the praise and tears of many a hardo journalists. Truble is,someone's just done a check on this fellow and can find no trace of him in any squadron. Completely blanco. Maybe he's gone off the radar now ;)

At the same time down in Herefordshire way the pubs are packed with SAS men telling in sotto voce voices their tales of battles and battles won. Another time we had the proud ex army Leicestershire man who marched every VE day with a chest of medals. Except on closer inspection the medals didn't add up,tho maybe the strident veteran was 120 years old!( I think there's even an 'outing site' for ex army heroes somewhere on You Tube nowadays).

Maybe its all like 'the one that got away'...the longer the time lapse the greater the fish or walk that you did!

Perhaps it shows she has a better grasp of the pleasures of the countryside than most of her colleagues.
Probably one of the great experiences is to be in the middle of a field of full eared barley, just before it necks, at night in the moonlight, with a slight breeze.
Perhaps she was inwardly laughing at at that reporter, suspecting that he did not realise just how sensual a feeling it is.

I'm convinced we need to smile more and it certainly makes me smile about Mr. Stewart and his image, the long black coat, always on his phone, was he a James Bond figure or not? Whilst walking across Afganistan was he on a mission for MI6, was he making deals between warlords? A carefully crafted image of the man, or just a coincidence?

For me though, no matter who gets in as the Tory party leader, I just cannot see in any way how the Brexit matter for the UK and its people can be solved 'successfully.' Even if the politicians find a way to leave, or if they can make it look as if we have left, I don't think any of them, including Mr. Farage and Mr. Corbyn, can achieve a 'successful' outcome either. As I see it, the UK is totally dominated by lots of hot air, waffle, clever words and naked personal ambition and the desire to hang onto power or to achieve it is all that seems to matter. When I personally try to look at the Brexit problem objectively I cannot find any real answers at all. Our leaders are still spouting off, 'might, could, or maybe' and that simplistic, 'nothing of substance' language for me, hasn't changed in three years.

Sorry to lower the tone of the thread but I find the whole thing very depressing!

Aside of any politics, his book on walking through Afghanistan is very good and interesting.  If you like travel based books, its a good one to try.

Rory Stewart seems to have everyone talking about him, I think that it is  refreshing to have someone that is interesting. People say he looks unkempt and odd looking, does this really matter?. IMHO I think Boris was hoping that Rory would be out by now, if there was a debate between the two I know who my money would be on.

I have a friend who is still active in military circles and I offer you this quote from a very recent message he sent me regarding this subject;
"Due to his penchant of dressing up in local rags during visits to Afghanistan his minders nicknamed him Florence of Belgravia, (aka "that stupid ****" due to his lack of appreciation of danger).

You refer to the "Walter Mitty Hunters Club". They are on farcebook. They can check out alleged false claims of military service and do a good job in many cases outing the fakers. A look at their past posts reveals a whole world of military wannabes, with some it's blatant, while with others it's just sad. The worst ones are involved in frauds and domestic violence, and more than a few have sought to enrich themselves by false representation of their past "achievements".
One example is the amount of people who claim they are or were in special forces, but none say they ever served as a cook or instrument tech.
As for medals, ebay is full of them, real and replica, and you can find awards for operations and events that never had a medal coined to cover them. These are called bling awards.
In my own experience after I left regular service I joined the ACF and obtained a commission. We had various dinners and parades where medals would be worn. One of our most stupid and ineffectual instructors would wear a gong that he stated came from his merchant navy service, but we became suspicious and had it checked, it was an award for convoy service in WW2, and our little Walt was not born until the 50s.

Did he wear the gong on the right or the left?  I have only one gong I can wear on the left and two racks that I could wear on the right.  You may have seen pictures of a young lad at the D Day celebration, still of school age, legitimately wearing gongs on the right.
