Apart from the above I have found 2 other disadvantages of using a smartphone. My phone is secured by a PIN which is a PITA to unlock each time I want to navigate. I know I can disable it but I prefer my phone secured if it falls into the wrong hands. Secondly the map screen is really hard to see in bright light.
OTOH, my gps unit, comes with a clip to keep it on my pack for rapid access, is always on, can be read easily bright light and battery life is not an issue. Moreover it is easier to  use as it relies on buttons rather than podgy cold fingers to operate it.
also how waterproof is the average smartphone, I know some are now but most aren't

Waterproof and shockproof cases are not expensive nowadays.

Too little, too late, too bad......

I use an etrex 25, basecamp and talkytoaser maps. Phone stays in a ziplock bag as back up. Never had an issue and never now use paper maps.

Does anyone own a Garmin Oregon 700?  I am thinking about investing but I am wondering about having the pay for additional mapping (extra ££££££s), does anyone know if this is the case?

Also, would rain be an issue or are the devices water proof?  Thanks for any advice in advance.

Many thanks,
Adam.

There is stacks of stuff on the interner about the Oregon 700. I have an Oregon 650 ,it is waterproof, mapping can be got free using OSM mapping from Talkytoaster or other similar sites.
It's all uphill from here.

Thanks, that helps.

I've been on a fair few sites but before departing with my hard earned cash it's sometimes easier to ask a direct question!

Now just to find it for the cheapest offering!

Thanks again.
