I can’t stand instant coffee. To me it is like non-alcoholic beer, low fat spread, or non-malt whisky. I would rather go without than have the artificial version. The real stuff less often is much better.

+1 to all those

and add alcohol free wine
So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

For me only ground coffee will do at home, a two-cup cafetierre is just right for my half-pint mug, made strong enough to stand the spoon up in and with three sweeteners added. Percol Intense Italiano was my favourite until that became unavailable, so now the next best is L'Or Classique. I only have one a day, mind, after breakfast.

On multiple-day walks I take a 35mm film pot filled with instant coffee, either Nescafe Blend 37 or L'Or Classique, they're both as horrible as each other (you can't compare the L'Or instant with the ground), especially in a plastic mug, but it's better than going without.

I used to carry a plastic teaspoon to measure two generous spoonsful but I left it out of my equipment when I realised that this was the only time I used it and I could drop the same amount onto my multipurpose plastic dessert spoon. So that's one little item less to lose, and three or four grammes less weight!

Also, don’t pollute coffee by adding cow excretions or sugar, or beer by adding lemonade, lime or anything else and especially malt whisky by adding anything other than a splash of water (definitely don’t add an ‘e’ before the ‘y’).

I take powdered lemon tea, probably full of E-numbers and bad for you but tastes better than plain black tea. Also no bag to mess up the world. Not a coffee drinker to much faff for a mug full of mud.

I use one of these, cost about £5-6, not as good as an aero press, but ok for camping...

Put a little sugar in your cup and some vodka.

I prefer the coarse ground boiled coffee in the forest it taste best made on a fire.
