TR High Rigg from Stannah Sat 5 Sep 20
« on: 05:07:04, 09/09/20 »
We planned on a low level walk, a new AW for Squeaky, High Rigg. We weren't sure what the weather would be like, we'd forgotten to check the forecast before we left! We parked in the layby at Stannah and walked up the A591 to access the path through the gate that leads up Wren Crag.

On the way to Wren Crag

Castle Rock and The Green from the way up Wren Crag

It was cold and a bit blustery and the wind was in our faces

The last of the steep bit almost over

The route is steep in places and the rock was wet making a slippery climb too on the rocky bits.

On the top of Wren Crag looking across High Rigg

We had good views and it was dry for the time being.

Looking south from Wren Crag with the Helvellyn range on the left

A look back toward Thirlmere and Raven Crag

Blencathra from Wren Crag

Looking back at our route

A lovely fell with lots of twists and turns and ups and downs

Squeaky leading the way

On the way to High Rigg summit

There were quite a few people about on the fell, it is a popular fell to do in iffy weather.

A new Wainwright for Squeaky

We got the summit to ourselves to take some photos, we hadn't expected to!

Clough Head and Threlkeld Knotts from High Rigg

View toward Thirlmere from High Rigg summit

Descending to the St John's Church col

We took the path leading left that leads to the col near the seat to the west of the Youth Centre. a slightly easier descent for aging bones.

Skiddaw with a bit of cloud

On the way toward Sosgill

We passed the church and said hello to a couple with big smiles on their faces, really enjoying their walk we thought. We took the gate past the graveyard on the very lovely path down St John's in the Vale

Lunchtime view of Clough Head and Fisher Wife's Rake

Our luck ran out with the weather when we stopped for lunch, it started chucking it down and we sat under the storm shelter until it stopped.

Squeaky ready to go

Pleb trespassing on Squeaky's back

Cute calf

The narrow path high above St John's Beck

This path needs a little care as there is a big drop down to the beck for a while.

Route map

A lovely walk, one that never fails to please. Stannah layby - Wren Crag - High Rigg - St John's In the Vale Church - Sosgill - Stannah. 5.6 miles and 397m ascent.

Good to see you back in the Lakes  O0  Blencathra looking lovely as always.
Great How, the wooded pimple in the middle of your pic of Thirlmere is the first hill I took my kids up in the Lakes to test the waters before Cat Bells 2 days later.

Stannah? You after stair lifts now? 😄 You should not put pigs on dogs, they might produce a chimera.
Great shots again.  O0

:)  We did think of Mel a few times on the walk we know High Rigg is a favourite of hers. And mine it is a great little fell.

She wasn't too keen on doing it for some reason  ;)

Good to see you back in the Lakes  O0

It was nice to be back  :)

I don't have stairs in my house, so that would be a no!

Great report and photos April, really like the view of Blencathra from there O0  Do you find Skiddaw nearly always has cloud around its summit? In my trips to the Lakes in previous years I found that very often. To get a cloud free summit I had to get up at 6.30am, gained the summit by 9am, back to Keswick by 11am in August 2017.

:)  A lot of the time, along with most of the higher fells!

Ahhhh  :smitten:

Thank you for checking up on my hill.  I also got a sense of de ja vu, and enjoyed every minute  :)

I'm puzzled though, when I walk it, I get the mileage at around 6.5 to 7 miles (on ViewRanger) give or take a bit depending on how many lumps I explore.

It was a very strange coincidence that I looked at your blog about High Rigg just before April posted her TR.  :o
Maybe because I've been looking at the map of that area, Clough Head and the Old Coach Road more specifically, and your walk up High Rigg subliminally crept into my mind....

No problem  :)

The figure quoted was measured using Viewranger but we didn't deviate from the main paths at all. I've just measured the route with my trusty mile marked length of string. String says 5.7 miles. I've noticed when walking with others if they measure the distance with their devices there is usually a discrepancy in the totals of distance and ascent so goodness knows what the real distance is  :)
