Going slightly crazy living in a house full of cardboard boxes, so I've been thinking about 2-3 day 'through trips' over the high fells in the Lakes.

- Top of my list is Penrith to Windermere, roughly following the course of the Roman Road, over High Street, with a camp out somewhere high. I would start in Penrith - the longer walk in will add to the experience. A variant would be to descend via LongSleddale into Kendal, but the last few miles look unsatisfactory,, whereas you can pretty much walk into Windermere off the hill.

- Second on my list is a N-S traverse of the Helvellyn range - Threlkeld to either Rydal or Ambleside, depending upon which way I would come off Farifield. I've had my eye on these two routes for years.

Other possibilities abound:

- Keswick to Broughton in Furness, via Ullscarf, Langdale Pikes, Bowfell, Coniston Old Man, Caw (train back from Foxfield)
- Ravenglass to Keswick, via Muncaster Fell, Scafell Pike, Catbells
- Cockermouth to Grasmere, a few variants here.
- Langdale to Silecroft (train)…..

I could go on - the possibilities seem endless. So much to look forward to - once this [censored]**y house sale is completed, that is!

There are many great possibilities, being on public transport now I've been scanning the maps anew recently.
Some routes I've already done:

Ravenglass - Keswick via Muncaster Fell / Scafell Pike / High Spy
Pooley Bridge - Windermere via High Street / Ill Bell
Sea to Sea via Scafell Pike (Silecroft - St. Bees)

Beats cardboard boxes any day  :)

Thanks April - indeed they are.

Also, just outside the Lake District, I've got my eye on Appleby to Brampton, along the crest of the Northern Pennines.

..and the last long section of the Pennine Way appeals to me too, an airy ridge walk along the border, as featured in the Spine Race. :)

The Cheviots are fab, we were going to go back there this year but haven't made it yet.

Oooh those are ideas to dream through the winter with.  I particularly like the Threlkeld to Ambleside one, may I borrow it?

Of course you may - routes over the fells are not subject to copyright, despite what a certain author might think!  :)

Public transport not the best, I suspect.

Not through trips, I know, but Ullswater and Ennerdale watershed walks look fantastic too.

Depending on which part of S Cumbria you are moving to, do not neglect the Fells to the S of Haweswater. The area to the west of Wet Sleddale is very quiet. There is a nice both at Mosedale Cottage too. https://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/bothies/northern-england-borders/mosedale-cottage/

Public transport not the best, I suspect.

It takes about 6 hours (if I remember correctly, it may be more!) to get to Wooler with 3 bus changes. It is a long time for us but especially for Squeaky.

I have just discovered there is a way to get to Kirk Yetholm from Carlisle, it takes 4 different buses and 4 and a half hours. To get to Great Langdale it takes almost the same time and it is 4 bus changes so we may get to the Cheviots this year after all. As long as it is the same time to get back again!

I'm certainly going to be looking at making good use of public transport once we complete our move - there are good bus and rail links, and it would be nice to ditch one of the cars.

I checked the bus timetable for Kirk Yetholm and it only runs Mon - Fri. We will have to go during the week!
