I read somewhere that they were constructed by the Roman army to look like troops from a distance and I recall AW saying they were marked on 18th century maps.

Local legend says that they were built when the border reivers came South from the border country to help scare them off before they rustled all the local cattle.

..and I was told they were put up by victorian hoodwinkers, it would be interesting to see which map they first appeared on.

I used to like in Kirkby Stephen, the town below in the Eden valley and I have no idea why they are there!!
