Parking at Maes-y-garnedd
« on: 13:43:14, 12/09/17 »
A little bit of a niche question but, I'll be in Wales next week and plan on doing some walking in the Rhinogs. I've read that you can park at the farm of Maes-y-garnedd at the end of Cwm Nantcol for a modest fee. Can anyone attest to that?

Last time was here it was £2 per car. Leave your money in the farmhouse porch with a note of your reg number. Problem sorted. Enjoy.
But take second stile out of Bwlch Drws Ardudwy or you will be in gorse with ankle snappers  hidden.

I assumed that you were going up Rhinog Fach in which case my note about the second stile is valid. You can of course use the masochists path which starts at the cairn in Bwlch Drws but the route through Cwm Hosan is imo the best for scenery. I will never tire of the views from above this small lake (Llyn Cwm Hosan) especially looking backwards. You could also climb R Fawr from the cairn picking up the obvious ascent ramp but that's a dreary way of climbing that peak.

When you reach Llyn Hywel you have a choice of route. Pouchers Gully is over your left shoulder and is a steep semi circular ascent.  Or you can cross the rockfall to reach the col between R Fach and Y Llethr (only three of the rocks wobble ;D ) But that means an out and back to the summit.

I was considering an exact repeat of this:

https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=13806

Essentially the route from the Nuttalls book. I may well consider the route up Cwm Hosan, rather than ploughing straight up from the cairn - Poachers Gully sounds fun. I don't suppose you have a photo so I can identify it when I'm there, or is it pretty obvious i.e. marked by a cairn or specific feature?

oK. i've read the route. A point about Rhinog Fawr and the descent gully. If you don't like the look of it continue for about 150 yards and there is a second easier gully. Did that a few weeks back.

As stated the direct route from the cairn in the Bwlch Drws is a demanding climb. If you want an easier option turn down the Drws (west) for 150 yards and take the first stile hopping the stream to get to it. Continue onn towards Llyn Hywel and you will see the gully on your left. It's a grass ascent much easier than the direct route. I found it years ago and only recently did I find that it was a route in Walter Poucher's book of Welsh walks.

I haven't got a photo of the actual gully. First pic is looking back down Cwm Hosan from close to Llyn Hywel. The gully will be visible to your right if you are standing where the pic was taken.

Second pic is of Rhinog Fach from Llyn Hywel. At the extreme left you can see that there is a 'break' in the summit line which the gully leads to.

Apart from saving your legs for the ascent of Y Lllethr, the Cwm Hosan route is more interesting and gives views of the mountain which you may not otherwise see. It probably adds 800 yards to the itinerary.

However you do it you will have a great day.

If it's good enough for Poucher ... ;)
