It can get cold here in the winter, but -40 we don’t often see.

We dont get -40 here in Britain but the wind on the mountain tops can make winter conditions extreme, to say the least.

For winter walking I'll start with my Ron Hill Tracksters, then some fleece salopettes covered by waterproof/ windproof Deluge overtrousers. Makes me feel pretty indestructible when the going gets tough, especially the salopettes.

For my top half a thermal base layer, thick fleece and Gote Tex Pro shell. Note that I get a good overlap with the salopettes.

Buffs are indispensable for neck and face when walking into a sleet laden gale.

... then some fleece salopettes...
That's an interesting one, I'd not thought of salopettes for walking. I always associated those with climbing in extreme conditions.

Also a snood can be very effective, you can adjust it to cover neck/mouth/nose and tightened as needed.

richard,
What is a salopette? Is it a bib overall?

I do use fleece if I know I'll be exercising hard and working up a sweat. I have 200 weight fleece pants (for mid layer) and a 300 weight fleece jacket.

What are you wearing for boots/gaiters?

Isn't a snood and a buff the same?

Either way we had them in the Army 40 odd years ago  O0

I'm Northumbrian  and would be shamed if I wore anything other than a pair of trousers and a thin cotton T Shirt. Those who need more on are either cockneys or wusses. :D

sussamb,
Thanks for the "prompt" info on salopettes. Wikipedia sez they are what we call bib overalls.

I haven't found it to be so cold over the past few years to warrant using warm trousers a lot, just a couple of times in the day and a few more at night in my case. Our winters these days, in the South anyway, are positively balmy to how cold it used to be, for example in the 60s. When was the last time I saw a foot long icicle, I'm sure it was around 30 years ago?

Anyway I have solved my cold legs problem, easily and cheaply. I bought a pair of Decathlon warm leggings for £8.99, they look like jogging bottoms but are not elasticated at the foot end. For me they are perfect, very lightweight, cosy, comfortable and I can just wear under my normal hiking trousers trousers in the day, or I can use them as leggings to keep me warm at night. I'll be taking them with me to the April Borrowdale meet, just in case I get cold at night.

Rab power stretch tights, fancy name for fleece long John's. Under gore Tex copy ski trousers (what you call pants), long knee length socks and ski boots. Scarpa for AT or Salome for Nordic.

I believe that is what you would call them, Eric.

For mountains in winter conditions I wear a pair of double tongued leather boots purchased 30 odd years ago for a trip to the Alps. Heavy but take crampons well and are good for kicking steps. Gaiters are old and tatty but still keep the snow out

I only wear the salopettes in real winters conditions. Recommended for keeping out the spindrift!

Buff and snood pretty much the same thing.
