Fan Fawr from the Beacons reservoir
« on: 22:44:34, 31/03/20 »
While I can't get out there, I thought it would be a good idea to write up my last walk in the Brecon Beacons:
https://claire-walking-blog.blogspot.com/2020/03/march-2020-fan-fawr-from-beacons.html
In short, it was my first trip to the Brecon Beacons in months. I parked near the Beacons Reservoir and walked up Fan Fawr, down to Storey Arms, grabbed something from the burger van then walked back to the car along the Taff Trail. I got caught in a sleet/hail/snow storm on the way up and it was very windy on top. I used microspikes to come safely down the steep side of Fan Fawr but then fell down a river bank on the easy walk back, hurting my shoulder and leg and trashing my walking poles.

Gorgeous photos of a lovely day out - until the last bit! Hope that you are on the mend, Claire.

I really don't know the Brecon Beacons at all well - they are very photogenic.

Thanks. I had some impressive bruises for a couple of weeks but this was a month ago so all is well now.

Nice pics Claire.  Most of us can only dream of getting out and about in the hills like that at the moment so thanks for posting  O0

Glad to hear you are fully recovered too.

When the sleet began and turned to hail and snow I did wonder whether I'd made a wise choice but it didn't last long. The wind was quite challenging too on the ridge and the summit, it was noticeable how much warmer it was when I was in the lee of the mountain.

Thanks - it wasn't as much snow as I'd hoped for when I drove over but it made for some good pics.

Yes - the bank was very steep, the penultimate shot is looking down the narrow path and I slipped to the right down the bank. At first I seemed to be falling head first towards the river but I grabbed at some rocks and swung round. Couldn't believe I'd managed to stop myself but I did wrench my shoulder doing it. The walking poles were cheap ones (a present so I can't complain but I will be using better ones in future).

Thanks, yes I am longing for the time I can get back to the hills. Strange thing was it was only a month ago but all the talk at the burger van was of the flooding still. Someone had just bought a new motorbike and was joking he should have got a canoe instead  ;D
