Mountain Marathon Chaos

Whilst I am the last person to wrap anyone up in cotton wool it makes me wonder if this event should have gone ahead.Having 2000 runners on the hill in conditions like this makes it almost impossible for the emergency services to cope if things go wrong.

Just seen it on the news, although they are all experienced it is the numbers that can not be coped with.

Lets just pray that they are all OK.

Im a bit worried. I know quite a few runners and a lot of the MR. I hope there all tucked up in a nice barn somewhere for the night.

A worrying time for all concerned. According to early morning reports there are still around a 1000 unaccounted for. Hopefully they have made their way down to lower levels to seek shelter. With restricted phone coverage in the area it will take some time before final figures can be confirmed.

A friend asked me to team up with him on this as his first team mate had to drop out.  Seriously considered it but couldn't commit to the training.  You would like to think that most of those taking part had sufficeint experience to extricate themselves … we'll just have to wait and see … I certainley hope so.

I would expect that all involved would have the kit and sense to hole up somewhere (even if it's not too comfortable)

I just hope everyone is safe and accounted for (racers and MR)

 Good news.

Race participants are not allowed to take mobile phones on the marathon.

 Now that is rather silly.

You'll be lucky. Many won't have carried extra food or clothing suitable to spend a night in. It would slow their running down.

Very difficult for the organisers to guess the UK weather. I remember years ago when I was in teh RAF Leuchars MRT, we were manning check points for the Cairngorm race, end of June, lovely evening night before and awoke to thick snow. Hopefully everyone is OK and get off safely.

If this report is true then the organisers were advised by the Police and MRT to cancel the event.

Well, prayers answered.

It did say on the news last night that all competitors had to have tent, food etc.
Fortunately experienced people with the right kit did sensible things and were all OK. Whether they should have started the race at all, particularly with the strain it then placed on the emergency services is a different matter.
