RAF helicopter fire - Snowdonia
« on: 16:31:55, 09/08/16 »
Just seen the breaking news about this ;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-37023986

Seems to have landed with engine problems & subsequently caught fire. Reports that all five on board were able to get out of the aircraft and safe.

More news coming in due course.

Thankfully it was a controlled landing, and all five relieved passengers managed to climb out, before the helicopter caught fire and burnt to a crisp.
It was in the right location to make a forced landing, on the ridge approaching Bwlch Main, just above Yr Aran.
Blimey it must have been exciting for onlookers to see a helicopter hurtling towards them, just imagine if there had been no safe place to land, it would have been a different situation.

I must admit it always worries me with helicopters - as planes stand a chance of gliding in to land (to some extent) whereas choppers are more akin to airborne bricks.
Apart from the wrecked aircraft the safety of the crew/passengers was a blessing.

Helicopters can auto rotate if an engine fails and can land in a smaller space so not as bad as you might think  ;)

Their collecting the wreckage from the ridge of YR Aryg early next week, and according to the Western Mail, they may require the services of another helicopter to remove the debris.
The wreckage is so charred that looking for the flight recorder may be impossible.

It's Yr Aran. Yr Aryg is on the Carneddau, different area altogether.
