Title: Photographers Question & Answers corner
Post by: Willowisp on 10:44:12, 22/10/10
Thought might be an idea to start up a Q&A section in here as I certainly have some questions I would like to ask.

Please try not to ramble to much in here as it would be good if it could be used as a reference guide to photography.

I suggest you title it as below in the hopes of being able to find information again at a later date (I have a terrrible memory ;) ) :

QUESTION:
Blah blah blah

ANSWER: in ref to question - Blah blah blah

QUESTION:
What is the suggested format for saving Photos files post production?
I get that JPEG is the industry standard for small compressed files but do you save files as TIFF once you have finished processing an image or do you just keep the RAW and JPEG files?
Title: Re: Photographers Question & Answers corner

It's an idea, but I think it's probably better just to carry on posting questions as separate threads.

That would give people the opportunity to 'ramble' - and for relevant discussion and different angles to evolve around each and every particular question (like somesort of 'forum' in fact!).

There are plenty of reference guides for photography around.

Question

If I shoot with a UV filter on, will it keep my prints from fading?

Nice one Dan - topic is now a sticky so it will always be at the top of the Photography section.

Question - What settings were you using for the sunrise pictures from Catbells, and Granty - What filters were you using? Then next time I get up early I'll know what to do ::)

Answer

Not sure of the suggested format to keep but I set my camera to shoot both JPEG and RAW for each picture. Disc space is cheap so I store the original RAW files on disc to save memory on my PC and use this as a master copy in case I want to process it differently in the future. Keeping multiple copies of both may be a good idea.

f8 (although for DSLR approx f11 I believe as my sensor is different size)
1/15 sec
ISO 100
Fixed 20mm 1.7 lens so 20mm (40mm in 35mm speak) ;)
Lightroom for processing

ANSWER: UV filter protect prints?
No is the simple answer. Pretty much the only reason to use a UV filter these days (I use one) is to protect your lens. Most lens now have a coating that is at least as good if not better at protecting your exposure from UV rays.

My answer: Save the RAW files and if you use lightroom ,the catalogue to go with it.

Export all files as JPG at their highest quality, there is no need to save as Tiff unless you want to preserve layers etc.

The most important thing, is keeping plenty of back ups.

Just used a soft edge 0.6 ND grad for the cat bells excursion. I broke my 1.2, but if I had a 0.9 I'd have used that as the skies were still a wee bit blown on the Blencathra shot when I imported it, so had to make the difference up with lightrooms.

I used most filters on the Derwent water sunset as it happens, stacking 3 different ones to allow long shutter and get spot on detail in the sky, apart from white balance issues the pictures came out nearly ready when I put them on the pc.

All I will say, if you decide to buy filters and you can afford it, go for Lee, no doubt. I use hi-tech and as good as they are and praised by many, the fact that they colour cast when stacked is not useful to me.

Re: saving images - because jpeg images are compressed, each time you open and resave them they lose a bit of information. TIFFs are not compressed so don't lose info.
Images for my library are saved as TIFFs and stored on CDs.  I also make a small jpeg to keep in the folder on the hard-drive.
UV filters take out some of the excess blue in the light but using a skylight 1A or 1B is better. 8) The fact that they protect your lens is an added bonus.  When I was working all my lenses were protected by Skylight 1Bs, even on my 5x4" cameras.
Now I'm retired (was ABIPP,AMPA, FRSA) I use a Canon G10 compact.

Sounds like you've left something on sensor, you could have another go with the wipes. But to be honest if you haven't got a loupe so you can look at the sensor to see exactly where the dust is you are just blindly wiping away at the front of your sensor. The Sony A700 is well known for been a pain to keep clean, I used to get mine cleaned every 6 months or so by the local camera shop, they charged £35. My new Canon is supposed to be much better with regards dirt on the sensor, but I've not had it long enough yet to make any real comparison!

John,

You've probably sussed it by now, but what I do is... go to Photobucket, select whatever image I want and click on IMG code - this copies it.
I then just paste it into my post on here.

Hope that makes sense,

Glyn.

I use CD discs but recently I invested in two large-capacity external drives. Everything goes onto those (The externals are mirror copies of each other. Belt and Braces as it were.) The drives can be connected/disconnected via USB at will, so no fuss with prepping or installation. I also have software (Handy Recovery) that allows me to recover photographs from the  memory cards and the discs after deletion. (As long as they aren't overwritten.)

I still have a few old-fashioned prints knocking around in albums mind!

They're cheap enough now Dibs so worth getting one. Quick tip though, never rely on just one storage place for photos - cos if it goes tits up you'll be gutted.

I just had a thought Dibbs..

If you have some old drives hanging about:

I had a PC motherboard go belly-up on me, which meant I had to format the drive for the new board, or buy a new drive too.
I bought the new drive, and kept the old one. I got an 'enclosure' to turn it into an external drive. Once I had recovered what I needed, I formatted the drive and now use it as an external storage drive, for PDF woodwork plans etc.

These  enclosures are just plug and play into a USB socket, and if you set the drive as a Master, that's all you need do.
You can buy these enclosures for IDE drives or SATA Drives.  Inexpensive, easy to assemble and solve a problem if you have old drives you thought were redundant.

I accept what you say John, and if you know what you are doing it is an option, but I went through all this with 2 spare hard drives I had. One failed almost immediately and the other got very noisy. In my opinion it is just not worth all the messing about. My photos are too valuable to me to risk loosing. I have a seperate external hard drive which I replecated my hard drive on to. It is worth getting a decent one. I got a WD (stands for Western Digital) 500gb, like this one
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/wd-elements-external-hard-drive-500gb-03661647-pdt.html (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/wd-elements-external-hard-drive-500gb-03661647-pdt.html)

WD provided free access to any programs you might need (like Accronis) should you wish to replicate you main hard drive .

A proper external drive will just operate automatically, including closing down as part of the computer closing down process.

I use a 2.5" 500gb Seagate external HDD with a dock. The advantage for me, is I can take it where I please without having to worry about plugging it in. Plus I hate having to faff about digging stuff out, plugging it in etc etc hence why my two 500gb 3.5" HDD's with plug's are just sat around not doing much except storing the duplicate photos I transfer across every now and again.

A 2.5" 500gb HDD will set you back about £45 now days. Very cheap.

Dibble, the safest place for your photos is on CD/DVD. Like everything to do with computers internal/external drives can fail/corrupt occasionally. I keep everything on a couple of drives, but the really important stuff is always backed-up onto a DVD for safe keeping!
Another tip if saving jpeg files (?) always keep a 'master' copy of the image that you never save over. Jpeg format 'losses' colour information every time you save the image, so it degrades the image.

Thank you everyone for your responses, I am reading them carefully and looking into what everyone is saying.  Thanks Granty for the £45 tip and thanks Dellwalker for the link.

Atm I am on my 5th dvd disc and it seems to be taking forever... but will persist.

Thank you for this info.,... that is very intersting.   I've saved them all onto dvd's and I clicked the option to treat them like pen drives.... ie where I can alter them... so that means, then, doesn't it... that I need to save my most favourite photos onto a dvd that I set up as not to be altered...

Thank you again, everyone.   O0

One other option that's worth considering is using an 'online' storage system, like Google's Picasa web albums.

The advantages over local storage are:-
Low incremental cost (first 1Gb is free, 20Gb is just $5 (£3.20) per year
    No worries about backing up
    No hassle when upgrading computer
Accessible from your phone/laptop and desktop computers, wherever you are in the world
Integration with Picasa desktop software is slick

The disadvantages are:-
You have to trust Google not to lose them or otherwise mess them up. (actually, the chances of this are slim. Google's backup management is likely to be a lot better than yours...)
You have to trust Google's security.
You have to upload them from your own PC, so decent broadband connection is required.
If you have many terabytes of data it's likely to be more expensive in the long term
It's a recurring cost (you have to pay your $5 every year)

Currently I use a mixture. A lot of my older photos are still on local storage in my home office (a 1TB Synoptics RAID NAS unit, if you want to know. Holds the music collection, videos, etc., etc. as well), but I upload all the best 'new' photos to Picasa Web Albums.

I suppose the best system is to print out the images that you really do like, and not to get too precious about the rest. I think with the advent of digital photography, a lot of us went click-happy, even more so than with film!

I still rely mainly on two mirrored external hard drives. I am operating Windows 7 and XP on two different machines and at times I find CDs have a habit of being temperemental between the two.

But I do have a lot of 'junk images' saved!

Hi.  I started a 10 week photography course for beginners several weeks ago - and part of the criteria is to take photos of anything and everything.  All photos should then be printed on contact sheets showing the file name, ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture settings.

I have photoshop but it doesn't allow me to select the above information.  I also have a disc for Picture Project 1.7 (PP) which came with the camera but my computer will not install it.  I'm not even sure if PP will show the information, anyway.

So what I need to know is,

a) Does anyone have any experience of Picture Project.  If so, does it let me show the info I need?
b) Does anyone know why I can't install it?  The DVD/CD RW does not recognize the CD at all, saying nothing is inserted. Someone suggested that I may have accidently deleted a component when uninstalling another program. The PC will let me play DVDs, however.
c) Does anyone know of, and can recommend, any free downloads I could use instead?

I have about a thousand photos to print off within the next couple of weeks, and any help would be appreciated.

Hi Starling,

I can't really help too much I'm afraid as I don't tend to print out contact sheets too much. When I do, it'll be a submission of about 10 images not 1000 but I'll just right click on the JPG and look at the properties and go into the Exif data and manually type everything up.

If you find a package though that does do contact sheets with this data automatically, do let me know.

Have you searched for the program you have on CD and can't load ?  It is probably available to download, off for example your camera's website.  Failing that search for photoshop and contact sheets, or similar - I'd be suprised if photoshop can't do what you ask.

Hi.

I had already located a Picture Project to download, but it would have cost me as I have limited mobile download.  Honestly, I really must get this looked into.  ??? .  I don't want to download it and find out it's worse than Photoshop. My version of Photoshop only allows filename, date, time, etc that photo was taken.  The College's version will print off the info I need, but the computers there are only available during lessons, and for photos taken during the lessons. Very frustrating.

Granty, thanks for this.  I've located the Exif data which I didn't realise was there before.   It looks as though I'll use this method for the time being and just print off the ones I really, really need.

Thanks for help.  O0

Sorry to be thick, but can someone explain something to me? In recent days I have attempted to post a trip report with pictures. When I try to load files, the system restricts me to 5 images but many other posters seem to be able to post many more pictures within the text of their post. I realise I could attach a link to Facebook or flickr but I would like to know how to incorporate pictures within the text. Any help will be very gratefully received.

The IMG code can be copied from the photo uploading sites and is the code to use when posting pics on here (as opposed to HTML codes) - you'll see the explaination if you read through the 'How to post pics' guide - it's one of the pink coloured threads in Photography O0

Hi Starling.

Google Picasa 3 (free software easy to use) may be of some help to you ?

One of the printing options allows for a 5cm x 8cm contact sheet which gives you twelve photos per A4 sheet.

If you click on border/text options you can add the exit detail below the photo.

The info printed under each photo will show camera type, focal length, shutter speed, aperture and ISO and you have the option to size your text and change colour of text. Just a pity it won't allow you to add a file name but file name option is available as a stand alone option without the exit info

I used it on my C&G Photo course and it's so easy to do  O0

Happy to help

For those of you that publish there photos on your own website in the hope of selling a couple....

Which sites do you use?
Do they cost?
Do you sell much through that medium?

Another question I have noticed my pictures come out quite dark when printed (darker than I want). I have self calibrated my monitor using the windows tools available but am aware that you can calibrate your monitor properly. Is it expensive? is there a cheap way of doing this as the windows method doesn't seem to have worked for me so far.

I use DSC Colour Labs in Manchester.

They offer some good advice re monitor calibration and printing results.

The idea is to send off a small order to check against your monitor but they will also send you a monitor calibration print and profile CD in advance if required. I'm happy with the results from this company. O0

A little info from their web site - more from here http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/quality_advice.cfm (http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/quality_advice.cfm)
Editing your Files.
Edit your images in a standard working space such as Adobe SRGB not a printer profile.
Working spaces are designed for editing images, printer spaces are not. From this point you have a file that can be sent to any printer. If you are sending your files to our lab please convert files to our profiles in Photoshop by selecting Image/Mode/convert to profile and then select our profile which will be in the list. For users of Photoshop CS2/3/4 choose Edit/convert to Profile.
For further information on ICC Profiles and colour management etc the following site is very informative www.drycreekphoto.com (http://www.drycreekphoto.com/)
An image that looks bright and clear on your screen should produce a perfect print. If an image is dark and dull on your screen this may produce a disappointing print. Generally, most digital cameras produce excellent quality results these days, without having to edit or enhance the image at all. The best way to set your screen to our system is to have an order printed and then check that the prints match your screen.

Once you have received your prints, adjust your monitor brightness and contrast to get as close as possible to the print in your hand.
If you require a monitor calibration print and profile cd in advance of your first order click here ([email protected]?subject=monitor%20cal)
Click here to see our calibration image. (http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/images/calibration_image.jpg)

Hope this helps

Once you have received your prints, adjust your monitor brightness and contrast to get as close as possible to the print in your hand.
If you require a monitor calibration print and profile cd in advance of your first order click here
Click here to see our calibration image.

So does this mean take a shot as jpeg have them print it and then adjust from there?
I think I will ask for the package you say they send. I have used these guys for prints before they are good and not to pricey.
Ta for the info that is excellent

Have just e-mailed to ask for there calibration stuff. Fingers crossed

I have just posted on a topic, where the conformation of the pictures have made a complete nonsense of the post. Four consecutive images all sized 600px wide by photoshop were downloaded to picture bucket, which managed to alter the image size in the process.

I resized the images in picture bucket to 600px wide but the post has remained as it was.

My question is;
do the pictures become embedded into the site when they are downloaded from the host site, so if I were to erase pictures from my host site would they still appear on this website?

no, there'll be a blank box where the photo used to be.

That's just a cached image - refresh (F5) and you should see the resized one.

I have a box full (guesstimate 500) of colour negatives and slides that I would like to convert to digital.
Question
Can anyone recommend a cost effective commercial company or method of converting to digital?

Try here Bear Cub  http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/index.cfm (http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/index.cfm) and click on Film Services. I use this company for prints etc and seem reasonable on price  O0

I had to re-size mine before uploading to tinypic to get them to fit on another forum, so you could try doing that.

I upload to tinypic too and you can choose what size to upload them, maybe try this site as I know it is possible on there.  O0

Photobucket has re-sizing in the edit tab. I re-size to 600 pixels across, leave the dimensions linked and the height takes care of itself.

Photos come out of my camera at between 5-6MB.  Can you tell me how to reduce them to less than 80KB to post on here without reducing the size of the photo too much?  I (try to) use ACDSee14 to edit but can't see a way to compress rather than reduce the size unduly. Any suggestions?

Wrote something about this earlier today here;
http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=23690.0 (http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=23690.0)

As said above picturebucket have resizing in their editing functions. But his does it on each picture individually, the PIXresizer software that can be downloaded free does batches of photos.

When I first started to post pics here I found 800 pixels width did not distort the page, 1000 pixels seems to work now.
Title: Re: Photographers Question & Answers corner
Post by: Oldstephen on 21:44:12, 23/04/13
But isn't there a difference between resizing and compression? I can resize  in windows  but "small" is still too big a file for here. And if i make it smaller it comes out very small in a post.
Title: Re: Photographers Question & Answers corner
Post by: barewirewalker on 08:31:45, 24/04/13
If you resize in windows is that for e-mailing, it may reduce the size to a default size. When I resize either individually or in batches I nominate the size I want. For the size of page on the forums I have posted on 800 Pixels seems to fit the page size, it is worth experimenting.

My understanding is that jpeg's do not compress much because they are already a compressed file, so if you compress them into a zip file the reduction in file size is minimal.

As I understand it the best way to post pics is to post them to a hosting site and then post the image file url.  Photobucket is the host I use.  Using that your pictures can be anysize.  I though have photoshop so save them in the lowest size to cut down the space they use up on the (free) hosting site as you have a limit, plus also they uplaod faster.

You can post images directly but they have to be small and I suspect theirs a limit i.e. you can't have 2 pictures that in total exceed that limit (but I'm not certain of that).

You can obviously post the image url using mobile format as it's just a written code.

Look at the last of the pinned topics in this sub forum for a more detailed explanation of how to do this.

The new revamped, although widely unpopular with a lot long time users Flickr now offers 1 terabyte of space with the free account.  That's a lot of photos!

Thanks Rob. Shame not to have the favility to post directly from my photostream, but i expect that level of functionality is quite high tech.

I have a Flickr account, so am part of the way there. But as I use it mainly via an app (and that rarely)  no urls! Will have to dust off the laptop if I want to post TRs with photos. However as I am inherently lazy with these techy devices, it's probably not going to happen :-) Thanks for the advice, in any case.

Would that work in the same way with Dropbox?

I uploaded a pic (via dropbox) in one of the threads on here, half expecting the pic to be resized to fit the page (this is what happens on other forums i post on) but it was the full 3.5K*2.5k size so only half of the pic was viewable on screen ::) ;D

Needless to say, i scratched that post.

Do you have to manually resize any pic before you post/link to on this site?

I always resize my pictures because the site doesn't.  I deliberately don't upload full res pics to hosting sites so resizing them is no problem and takes minimal time.

I used to use a nifty little free programme that resized my photos back in the day when resizing was needed.  Might have to search around for it again.

I've got so used to not needing to do it any more, it was quite a shock when i previewed a post and only half of the pic could be seen on the screen ;D

QUESTION:
I am thinking of getting a camera to take on hikes and general days out and have noticed that the brigde type cameras have a great zoom and seem to do what I need, however I am not sure if they can be used with filters etc. Or do I go for a cheaper DSLR?
Cheers

If they have a standard screw thread on the front of the lens then almost certainly the answer is yes.  Failling that you can get filter systems succh as the cokin ones which fit onto the front and then their own filters slot in.

Suggest you look at the specifics for a model your after or go into a decent photography shop that sells them (or somewhere like John Lewis).

I use both flickr and photobox, and both I think have apps.  Using such app you can upload pics to your chosen (or other) hosting site.  You then post the image links to your trip report.

I have a flickr question for folks - or in fact any other website that can host high quality photos ?

For flickr I was wondering if anyone had gone 'pro' and if so how they did and the benefits ?

Failing that what other sites can people recommend that are high quality and not too pricey ?

You can see the kind of thing I currently have on flickr in my signature, I'm just not sure it does what I want very well or easily - although it is of course free.

Thanks in advance,

Rob.

Download Eazy Thumbnail I tried to post a link but the forum censors the link title (you'll see why if you google it) the name of the company sounds similar to a naughty word.
it's quick and easy to use, and does one pic or a whole folder full.  Better still it's free.  I've been using it for years.  You used to have to give an email, but I've never had any spam from them.

When you post  theres an attachment box on the bottom. Theres usually a size limit by I cant remember offhand what it is.
The other way is to upload your pic to Flickr or somewhere first and then link it here.

Upload your picture to Flickr.
Go to your picture and click on the share pic icon (It looks like a curved arrow) at the bottom right.
Pick the BB code tab.
Copy the content of the address bar it displays
Paste that directly into the body of the text of your post.
Post your post.
Your picture will be displayed in your post as it appears on flickr.

I am looking for a camera that is lightweight and has RAW file capability for hiking any suggestions?

We are using a Sony RX100 (Mark III), very small and lightweight and shoots in RAW. Excellent quality for its tiny size (fits in my hipbelt pocket) with a decent zoom range. They are up to the Mark VII now - expensive, but the older Marks like ours are relatively cheap.

For post processing, whatever your choice of camera, check that you have software available for your operating system to handle the RAW files, including the often forgotten lens-correction facility.

I always carry my Olympus 1s with me. It is light, fully controllable and shoots RAW if required. It is like a mini SLR and the one thing that is a prerequisite for me is a good view finder, which it has. It is not an optical viewfinder but it is 1.44 million dot electronic. It really is nice too.
It is compact and although will not quite fit in a pocket it will fit in a small camera bag and you can carry it on your shoulder all day. Most of the common parameters are adjustable with buttons or dials on the body which saves time by not having to scroll through a menu.

They are not made any more but you can pick a good second hand one up off E Bay or Amazon for a third of the original cost which was a round £450 if my memory serves me right.
