Allowed out to Roam!
« on: 11:44:14, 23/02/21 »
Has anyone worked out from the announcements yesterday when we’ll be allowed to walk outside outside our local area? I don’t want to stay out overnight or travel vast distances; maybe 20-30 miles. Last time we were given a specific announcement on when we could cast caution to wind and exercise with gay abandon, this time there doesn’t seem to be that indication. I don’t want to meet a hoard of people or even another person, but if I have to walk the same 8 miles for much longer I think I’ll lose my faculties 😄.

Keep an eye on the Government website that Boris mentioned a few times yesterday, he said it would be updated regularly.
No mention, as far as I am aware about "out of area" recreation. In fact even the allowance to meet up with another was hedged with the fact the it had to take place in your own locality, starting from your own front door.

As long as the death rate keeps dropping, that's the main thing eh?
Too many of us have lost friends and close relatives so far. Better to be cautious than have another major clampdown, I believe.

Edited to add link(I think this is the one, others may correct me, please)

By March 29th, it’ll be all go. Hancock as good as said, even though he says they’d recommend staying local.

Before then ie 8th March, it will actually depend in how much wiggle room there is in small print ie what is advisory, what is the law, and how prepared the individual is to do a Cummings.

I saw this in the Guardian, what struck me wasn't the sites as such it was the prices! Maybe they are pretty average and I'm the one completly out of touch, but I hate paying more than £10 a night for a 6' x 4'  area of grass. I'm planning more wild camps this year. I hadn't put my mind to thinking that more people will be planning a 'staycation' this year so maybe I shouldn't be surprised? I wonder if the sales of tents, motor caravan, and towing caravans have gone up as well?

I drifted onto YouTube this afternoon and the first video that I saw was Abbie Barnes and her video about the fears and anxieties of Wild Camping. I watched it through and thought for any of us who 'worry' about wild camping in any way it's worth a look. She dissects the issues of wild camping into easily understood segments and allows one to think for oneself as well.  I like her non-preaching style, her speech clarity, and her personal presentation and I really appreciate it that when she speaks there are no 'ums' and 'aahs' or 'like' to worry about. She may have a word prompter script in front of her but I don't want to think so, her words just seem to flow quite naturally. So in my view, definitely worth a look and a listen.

Back on topic, there is news today (12 March) about Wales starting to lift a few restrictions. Some of these are relevant to walking in groups and to travel within Wales. There is no indication of when travel from England into Wales will be allowed.

From Saturday 13 March
* 'Stay at home' will become 'stay local'. People should stick to a five-mile radius of home
but Health Minister Vaughan Gething has said there will be flexibility for people living in rural areas
* Four people from two different households can meet outdoors to socialise, including in gardens
* Outdoor sports facilities such for golf will reopen

From Monday 22 March
* Gradual easing of non-essential shopping and garden centres to reopen

From 12 April
* All shops will be able to open - the same date as in England.

I suspect it’s still going to be a while before we can go back into Wales. You wonder whether 12/4 is when they are going to ease things. Tourism related businesses must be chomping at the bit.

I’m just going to be happy to get to the Lakes and Peaks. All we need is a bit of decent spring weather.

Thanks.

It’s isn’t Milton Keynes, I’m based near Manchester - so extremely well placed to be fair. 40 mins or so to Peak District, and about 90 min to Snowdonia and the Lakes. I feel very lucky to be within a day trip of three stunning places, with some of the best walks in the country.

In the summer of 2019, we booked a large bungalow at Landal Darwin Forest in the Peak District and invited our two sets of children and grandchildren to join us for the week. We had a brilliant time, including walking Kinder Scout on our own plus doing lots of easier walks with the kids.

We rebooked the bungalow for 2020, then chose to carry the booking over to late May 2021 rather than cancel because of Covid.

When we realised that the three families wouldn't be able to stay in the accommodation together this year, we came close to cancelling. But at the last minute, we managed to find a nice two-bedroom chalet for us very close by, so we're letting the kids have the bungalow and the Peak District is on! (Fingers crossed!!)
