Firstly, is this an ongoing problem, or something that only happens when you're out hiking so to speak?
If it's only something that happens in the 'great outdoors' then I'd say it's probably due to equipment and boots are an obvious place to start. As you're no doubt aware boots need time to settle in, and so if you're sure about the size, I'd just give them a little more time.
Have you just come back to hiking after some time away? It's just with the comment that the boots are "10 years old", in which case it could be that you're feet are just getting used to the strain again.
Personally, I'm dubious about these socks, and aren't convinced they are necessary. I've walked many a mile in whatever socks I happen to find in the drawer and haven't had a problem, but when I started hiking some years back, I suffered from cramp quite badly.
