With forecasters predicting better visibility in the southern Mournes yesterday, I headed for Rostrevor forest park. The forest park has a good car park which is very busy on sunny days. I walked through the forest towards Slieveban, my first peak of the day. Slieveban is one of my top five summits in the Mournes with its breath-taking views across Carlingford Lough. During my last visit to this region, I decided I would take in Knockshee at a later date. Instead of following the fence to Slievemeen, I headed cross country style to Knockshee where I followed grassy track to the summit. Upon reaching the summit, views opened up of the eastern Mournes and Slieve Foye. Knockshee has no connecting ridges to any mountain apart from Slievemartin so the return route was a formality. I had lunch on Slievemartin before descending through Kilbroney forest on a cycle trail followed by a minor road back to the main car park. Total distance was just over 13km taking 4 hours.
