If you are starting from Keswick, there are several good spots to watch climbing,  Shepherds Crag above Derwentwater about 2 miles south if Keswick is probably best.

Yes you can wild camp but only above 300m.  http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/index/enjoying/outdoors/openaccess_and_crow.htm might give you some more information.

Wild camping is technically illegal, but tolerated in the Lake District as long as you're sensible, and discrete, about it.
Some decent pitches in the area you're interested in :

Styhead tarn - can get very busy at times though
Sprinkling tarn - quieter than Styhead, but also more exposed
Angle tarn ( Langdale ) - only a couple of pitches there, but pleasant enough

There are a few hidden pitches that are superb, but I'm not willing to share the locations  ;)

If I were following the route that I think you are I'd be tempted to walk down into Wasdale and camp on either the NT site or the small site opposite the Wasdale Head hotel - their bar food is top class, and their own brewed ales are out of this world  :)
